Regularly do S H trips of 24 hours but tend to be totally k...d at the end as i am unable to sleep due to shipping, navigation issues or lobster pots etc
There are loads of companies offering all sorts of energy supliments. I cannot stand some of the energy gells, they make me sick immediately. Red bull, etc is a no no as well.
So question to forumites is
How do you deal with tiredness when sleep cannot be an option & you are at sea & how do you create energy?

How about a kitchen "Pinger"
 
A kitchen alarm.....also try hoving too for a while at least you dont run stuff down!

I have a Hanse 311 which will not heave to. My last 2 yachts were brilliant at that but a Hanse with its self tacker & fin keel is useless. Plus approaching the Thames estuary at night os not the place to nod off or heave too for more than a few mins
 
Kitchen timer with a "ping". The idea is that the horizon is about 10nm away; a 20kt ship will take 20 minutes to move nearly 7 of those miles; you may have moved 2 of them; so if you set the pinger for 20 minutes and doze, the ship will still be 1nm away when you wake. Quite a bit of safety margin 'cos ships are visible well over the horizon.

As for energy, sugary sweets and chocolate work; No-doze caffeine pills or chocolate covered coffee beans keep me awake; tea and coffee are essential as are cup-a-soups when it's cold.

Heave to and power nap for an hour.
Dang must type faster
 
Presumably one of those timers that alerts you when something needs to be done at the oven.

Doesn't give you energy but wakes you hopefully before you bump into something.

Regular sugary stuff like chocolate?

I have 2 timers & can get 15 mins kip sometimes but try sailing from somewhere like Grimsby to Lowestoft with not a few but hundreds of lobster pots.
Or channel islands to newlyn with all those d..d ships about. Same goes for the roundabout by the Elatma buoy

Another thing about a Hanse cockpit is that there is no where to lay down. The cabin is low & i cannot rest my head on that either. So sleeping involves nodding off then falling over & immediately waking up. Oh for a nice deep cockpit!! With somewhere to rest without fear of falling overboard

What with the above and not being able to heave-to, sounds like you bought the wrong boat.

When I did sh overnighters, (max I did was 12 hrs tho). I rigged a seat in the companionway, looking forward. You don't really want to get too warm though? I used the cold to keep me awake. Clip on. I guess if there is a danger of falling asleep, then your perception of traffic and distance won't be much good either. Worth finding crew.
 
I find 24 hour sails, double handed hard, work too. Things get easier after 48+ hrs.

Dunno what to suggest apart from taking another body with you.
 
No way. Fantastic boat. All boats are a compromise the 311 is fast, leaves most 35 footers like halbergs & moodys for dead. Absolutely brilliant for single handing. A real trimmers boat & responds to a bit of tweeking

Got no chance against a well found 301 though has it :p

I can't understand the self tacked myself. Why not just set the headsail on the cars so you can heave to. (as an aside my sailmaker told me the other week that the jib on my 301 won't set right on the cars as it is designed for self tacking. Is this so? I've never noticed...) But if so and you have another headsail use that. Overall, if singlehanding, why not set the boat up so it will hove to before leaving?

Of course it's another thing if you think the boat won't hove to well whatever sails you fly- that's also my opinion of mine, but I have never tested it.
