I have just discovered to my horror that the latest Admiralty Thames - Ramsgate folio requires 49 pages of corrections.

While a brief triage shows many are not relevant (being in Belgian waters etc), and some are already deleted there remains a vast amount of detailed plotting to get the folio up to date.

Has anyone got tips and tricks of how to speed up this dreary task? (I don't mean smartarse stuff like "buy a chartplotter instead") just quicker and easier ways to get corrections down on a paper chart. Simply plotting positions is probably the slowest bit.

Input much appreciated.

Get a demo of the 2017 electronic charts from Memory Map, they're scanned Admiralty charts so hopefully with have most if not all your corrections applied. Should be quicker to copy from the screen than plotting position from the NMs. I'm about to try this with the NE Scotland folio, which although new is a 2012 issue so loads of corrections needed.

I tried updating my charts for the Solent once. I gave up after some notices seem to be removing previous corrections ! If a buoy has moved by a hundred yards does it matter to a small boat ? For entering a harbour for the first time I use my almanac (new each season) but this can be over a year old and the same problem as notices was found !

Removing previous corrections presumably means things have reverted to the status quo.

A hundred yards? I suspect you haven't sailed the E Coast and Thames Estuary where the answer is, "yes. very much". (As it is anywhere else, really.)

Dead simples. There is a free ILLUSTRATED weekly update of NtMs for the Wash to Dover, across from Boulogne to Hook of Holland. The idea is to:

allow you to quickly select relevant changes;
quickly spot or decipher the changes;
see all changes in the monitored area, or,
select one or more or all of the areas (i.e. to quickly spot changes in part of that monitored area such as Havengore to Dover)
download pdfs of each particular NtM in which you have interested
download pdfs of each Illustration of which you have interest, AND
how about checking the Temporary NtM list - I monitor Ramsgate (inc Margate (!)), Medway, Port of London Authority, Crouch Harbour (inc the Whitaker Channel), Blackwater/Maldon, Brightlingsea/Colne, Harwich Haven, Ipswich Port, Lowestoft, Great Yarmouth, the Norfolk Broad, Blakeney, Wells, Kings Lynn. The temporary NtM can frequently be important - i.e. in the Medway near the docks there is a current exclusion area for safety and they will monitor and fine leisure craft.

Find it here: http://www.crossingthethamesestuary.com/page9.html

IT's FREE

Oh P.S. The UKHO have licenced me to replicate the NtMs. It's updated Monday evenings (apart from the odd week delayed on account of sailing)

Dreary?

Trawling over maps and charts is one of the joys of life. It sounds like a pleasure.

Thanks to all for the various tips, but Tillergirltakes the crown by a long country mile with that fabulous site - that's exactly what I wanted!
Very many thanks -

I tried following the UKHO guidance, starting here https://www.admiralty.co.uk/charts/leisure-charts

There's a link to a video "How to apply NMs to SNCs" (love the acronyms). The link says "video is private".

Further down the page is this link https://www.admiralty.co.uk/AdmiraltyDownloadMedia/ADMIRALTY%20Leisure%20Charts/Guidance/Keeping%20ADMIRALTY%20Leisure%20Charts%20up-to-date.pdf which has a section on page 3 "Updating Admiralty Leisure Folios ". Step 1 works but Step 2 refers to a left hand menu that isn't there. I can't find a link "Notices to Mariners" on the page.

But there is the link called "View and download the latest NMs here" which shows very long files of cumulative NMs for each leisure folio. How can you tell when these files are updated? They don't seem to have a publication date on them.

Or should I be using a different approach?

Derek
