I'm looking at buying my first boat to help a friend out that needs to sell quick. I live near the river in Hammersmith but have no hope of mooring anywhere nearby. Does anybody know the cheapest way to moor a vessel temporarily for a few months and where the best place to go might be. I would like it to be relatively close so I can spend some time cleaning it, getting familiar and doing maintenance until the start om next year then take of for a trip. Could move it regularly and not looking for anywhere with all whistles and bell, just somewhere to park.

Am I just being ambitious or does anyone have any ideas.

Its tricky where you are, but you do have some options...Dove Pier (Hammersmith), Cadagon Pier (Chelsea) and Kew Marine (Kew).

None may have space as they are fairly popular spots, but other than midstream moorings (where you would need a tender to get to your boat) I can't think of any others (bar full on marinas' which will cost significantly more).

Hi Alondonboy,
Welcome to the forum!
You will need to give us some information about the size of your boat, ie length and beam(width) before we can really make informed suggestions.

Also, if you want to work on it, do you really want it in the water or would you be better off on dry land for a few months?

Where do you want to use your boat, tidal, non-tidal, canals?

Good luck. :)

26.5 ft, 8.5 ft beam is what I'm looking at. It's been out the water and is very clean outside. Would like to tidy up and make some improvements to the inside and get some use of perhaps taking it to the med early next year so just want a home with minimum cost for the next 3 months. Find it annoying that everywhere offers running water, electricity and all other manner of things I don't want which I'm paying for.

you will find for ease of living that you WILL want these things

I don't understand why I would want these thing's if I'm not there??? It's like having a caravan with your satellite tv and 240v plug in so you can just sit in the garden with it. I want it to travel with but just need somewhere to leave it when I'm not using it.

I was reading your previous post , as that you were going to be living on it ?

Guildford's not too far but would have ideally liked somewhere nearer. I guess people just like to travel to and stay on their boats, I prefer to look at it as an alternative mode of transport (somewhat more enjoyable than driving). The more I'm looking into it, the more I don't think I'm going to get what I want from it :-(

same here, but also if you are going to be working on it it helps to have water/leccy for the time, not always needed agreed

Contacted 20 marinas off of which and they're all in the realms of 2-3k, again all boasting of services I don't want. Maybe I should just concede and do it the same was as everyone else. That way I can just buy a caravan, park it in a pond and save loads of money.

Its always a problem on the Thames you have to be in right place at the right time to find a decent cheap mooring, but they are out there. Sometimes its better to find a mooring first then buy the boat to fit:)

Exactly what I'm trying to do at the moment. Mate sold boat but sale fell through so still a possibility but just cant fins anywhere reasonable to store it so looking doubtful. I'm abroad for most of the rest of the year so basically just need somewhere to park it until I get back and can sort something out, but if it's this much trouble perhaps it's telling me to reconsider.

Have you tried Eel Pie Island at Twickenham? Also Weybridge Marine just outside the entrance to the Wey. You are looking for a "boatyard" methinks, rather than a marina !

Also Port Hampton, the island just upriver from Hampton Ferry - reached from Sunbury side.

Why not abandon the expensive Thames and try the canals.
Plenty of bankside moorings with no facilities.
There are some cruisers on the canals...
