Alway close the salon door when under way, make sure you have a key on you , . As you will get a layer of salt all over salon otherwise. Saves loads of polishing when you get back , so you have more time for chatting {drinking} and eating.

Does that apply on all rivers?

Or just when close to the sea?

Well for safety reasons I always lock doors open. A bit of muck is one thing. Not being able to get in in emergency is another. Been there got the tee shirt.

Good point, The type of boats I am on are sports cruisers with the domed door, and if you come off the plain quickly you can fall down into the salon, its a 4ft drop mim. also the patio doors on a f/b cruiser if rough at all need to be closed, was on a boat 52ftl f/b and a freeck wave hit us and the whole of the salon cockpit was under 3 1/2 foot of water. if the door had been open/forums/images/icons/frown.gif.
Every one has there reasons for doing things the way they do.
