Tiny Tach Experience?

One, on any injection pipe. It clamps round the pipe and senses the swelling/pulse of the injection. Must have to be set for the number of cylinders. My engine is single cylinder. I have had one of these for a good few years and it works fine. By the way, it is handy as an engine hours meter too.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the number of cylinders irrelevant? If the sensor is attached to a single injector then it's whether it's a 2stroke or 4 stroke that affects the reading. For 2 strokes rpm is equivalent to the number of pulses per minute but for a 4 stroke it's the number of pulses per min x 2. I guess the vast majority of boat diesels are four stroke?

I've got two TinyTachs fitted. Cracking little devices. I'd did find that one was not reading properly but I moved it to a different injector and it worked perfectly since.

Where it says 'attach to the fuel line' what exactly does it mean? Any one of the four injection pipes? Or one on each?

Here's a picture of the Tiny Tach transducer attached to the fuel line of a 1GM10. Only need 1 transducer attached to one cylinders HP fuel line on a multi cylinder engine.

The only drawback I found was that the battery did only last 5 years. It is not replaceable. I did take a while to get it set up and running (about 18 months in fact) as I spend too much time thinking about where to put things and how to do them instead of just getting on and doing it. The first sensor did not work well as the injector pipes did not seem to be a standard size but Richard sent me a couple more to try and I sent the ones that did not work back. The sensor detects the pressure pulse in the injector pipe with a piezo sensor and must be fitted tightly to the pipe as it is the expansion of the pipe that affects the piezzo unit. I got the first one to give a reading by shimming the pipe, but a slightly smaller one clamped tightly enough on its own.

Despite what was stated in an earlier post, there is a battery in the diesel version (or was when I got mine.) It is to drive the display and provide the voltage for the op-amp in the input circuit. Mine died last year.

That's is correct.

Another thing to make sure of is, fit it to the bare pipe as this can effect the readings and can change the dia of the pipe. I removed the paint, fitted it and then re painted afterwards, both sender halves should fit together tight if the right size. All worked perfectly from day one no problems at all.

Fitted mine on feed pipe between injector pump and 1st injector supply pipe - Yanmar 2gm20

As per post #12 six moons ago. Of course reading the thread would be a condition for knowing..

I am sure that micha571 did read the thread, as did I. As the thread only started on 24 January this year, I wonber how long a moon is in your part of the world.

Thanks to mischa for the information, I was doubtful of what I read in post 12 as it seemed to conflict with the info in the instructions that came with mine. Of course that was purchased several years ago and I realise that specifications do change, but the function of the battery was not restricted to maintaining the memory.

The spec has certainly changed. The new diesel one I bought (as a result of the supporting recommendations on this thread) has flash memory (so no battery to fail after x years) and also has a backlight.

Hey guys... Got a tiny tach after the posts on here... Where should I connect the engine ground lead? Anywhere in particular?

Nearest point I could get was noe of the manifold studs. My internal battery expired and I have not replaced the unit. I am currently trying to work out how to mount a cycle computer to act as a rev counter. Only problem is shortage of the lead from sensor. I would have got a wireless one but it was the wired one Lidl was selling. For about a fiver!

....fitting one this winter.....................

But not now, firstly finding a place to clamp the transducer on the Yanmar 2GM20 installation was problematic, and it dropped into the bilge, which is deep and has VERY limited access......if it did fall that far? After several hours I've not found it...... But the final straw was that because the engine is mounted under the saloon table (lots to commend that idea) wiring it to the battery box and bus bars was all but impossible on my particular boat, so have given up. A TinyTach (minus transducer) can be made available if someone so desires; TinyTach do replacement transducers around £30.......

The Yanmar rep at Mylor told that I should just use one of the nearby clamp fastenings that secure the injection pipes. So I did... And it all works fine :-)
