Help! I urgently need to get my hands on some tinned cable- twin flat 14AWG/2mm by the weekend- Power Store are out of stock and I need it to rewire my nav lights- anyone know who stocks this on the east coast?

What\'s wrong with using ordinary domestic wire and tinning the ends?

Take standard domestic off-the-shelf multistrand copper wire and clean the 5-8mm ends with emery paper. Tin the ends using lead free silver solder and a 40w soldering iron. [Flux is not needed if you clean the ends and the soldering iron properly]

Now I'm confused. Ithought that the point of using tinned cable was that it prevented corrosion which could penetrate well into the insulation and cause resistance and ultimately complete failure. I have stripped cable on the boat, albiet 25 years old, and found it black well beyond a foot. I'd like to know what is best becuse tinned cable is about four times the price of the stuff from B&Q!

TRy your local Electrical Distributor - but stress the Tinned bit as he might have to order it in, or try RS components or Farnell - they both stock them.

If you tin the ends, make sure you clamp / fix cable to avoid any movement. When you tin the end you end up with a solid bit and a flexiable bit, were they meet is a big change in section, this causes a stress raiser / high stress point, and the cable will fracture here due to movement.
The cable going black will cause an increase in resistance if a clamp joint is used, ie screw or crimp. We soldered a lot of cables to PCB's or switches, and never had a resistance problem with black strands, but cables were clamped to switch panel.
I have seen 20 year old panels with some black and some bright copper in the same harness. The blackening looks like it's related to the length of time the cable is powered up.
A good blop of Vasoline may well help if at the top of mast if tinned is not available.
