I have just knocked out some nails that were holding in pads either side of the keelson. These have pushed out 2 lead tingles on the underside and the pads & tingles were covering 4" circular holes in the hull. I would imagine that these were intakes for a steam boiler or similar.

Assuming that these must have been put in 65-85 years ago, I'm not going to be the one that replanks the area. There are loads of other small tingles covering redundant skin fittings in the hull. The teak planks are in fine fettle.

My question is which is better to replace with - copper or lead? What is best to bed them in with?

Thanks in advance.

Years ago an old friend of mine had an old wooden motor boat. Would often see him beached putting another tingle on to stop a leak. He eventually sold her and the new owner had her craned out. She broke into pieces upon lifting !!!!

If the hole is in just one plank then a copper tingle with copper nails and Sikaflex would be an appropriate way to deal with it. The real alternative is a graving piece in the hole with a backing plate internally, but this can be tricky if there is any curvature to deal with.

That's why the old boys used lead. It can be moulded into a curve or other strange shape. They knew what they were doing.

Thanks Guys, particularly theoldplucker .

To clarify, there is already a graving piece in each hole mostly on one plank but about 1" into the 'thingy' plank (why did the name of the 1st plank up from the keel escape my head just as I was about to type it ).

So we have one vote for lead and one for copper. I have some copper sheet available (an old hot water tank) and can easily buy some lead flashing.

Bedding compounds available include roofing tar, putty/grease/red lead, Sikaflex or 3M substitute. Any others?

Just out of curiosity, what made you disturb them? Were they weeping?

I have just put in a dozen or so ribs and as I was filling in old nail holes, I thought that I would replace the pads as they were showing distinct signs of rot due to rainwater rather than weeping.
