I'm after a copy of the above documentary, its been on BBC 4 a couple of times over the years. Basically my sky+ box had a hissy-fit so i went for a planner rebuild and lost this documentary as well as a load of other great docs i had saved, really want this programme as there's a minute or two of the Westerly factory circa 1970 as well as capturing the era of the early sixties when sailing really took off as a hobby.

I spent an hour last night going through the BBC's web site and found it almost impenetrable with regard to contacting someone and although the internet through up many sites that claimed to have the documentary they were all torrents which i'm not keen on.

So if anyone knows where i can get a copy or indeed has one please get in touch.

cheers

roger

Hope this doesn't drift your thread too much.

Years ago there was a Smith and Jones one-off comedy about one of them inviting the other for a weekend on his boat. it turned out to be a grim, mouldy old pit and I remember the comedy being very good.

I've tried googling but to no avail.

Any other bright ideas as to how it might be found?

I record a lot of interesting programmes off the TV and save them to DVD. I think I have a copy

Update - Yes I have found it.

coincidentally, I watched that recently - very interesting, indeed!

The first half, explaining the social impact and of sailing in the UK I thought was brilliant and very informative. It explains a lot about the history, the builders, the boats themselves and trends that echo till today.

Then, suddenly, the docu goes off on a tangent to explain the famous race... which is totally captivating as a subject, only it kind of stopped the flow... so I thought, anyway...

I think its the only documentary on the subject of the boom in popularity of sailing, i often sight this programme to many a friend of mine who believe (wrongly) that sailing is the preserve of rich tw@ts who all wear blazers and sip pimms,..............i mean i do but thats not the point, ha ha!

But no, its a cracking little prog and were it not for my topbox going on the fritz its something i like to watch now and again, i'm hoping old salt can sort me out when he has the time. IIRC theres a rather young looking Bob Fisher taking Valarie Singleton out for a blat round the cans in a dinghy, as a piece of social history i find this whole era fascinating both from the point of view of the boat building industry we once had as well as our country's social habits.
