UT is the 'modern' replacement of GMT, and is often written with the designation Z. Hence, 0825Z would indicate 8:25am UT time.

As far as boating is concerned, GMT, UT, UCT, UT1 and so on, are the same since they are within a second or so of one another, the most accurate being UTC which is to a billionth of second a day.

These different timings have arisen since it is neccessary in some sciences to know time under slightly different circumstances - rather like the argument of different chart datums - WGS84, OSGB1936 etc).
