I spent 3 days cleaning and prepping my Fletcher 238 for a see trial, filling it with petrol arranging for it to be lifting into the water and taking a day off work to meet the interested party. But the flamin' bloke didn't turn up....... now I am very pee'd off!!!! Why say your interested when your not? just a phone call or even leave your phone on!!!! GRRRRR!!!

You know now why brokers are reluctant to give sea trials without a deposit. Every one gets free boat rides.

Might have been a blessing in disguise?
The guy lived in spain and was going to hand over a cheque on the day of the sea trial (day before he was going back to spain). He then asked if we could deliver it by sea that same day. My broker said not until the cheque has cleared........ we haven't heard from him since!!!
Lucky escape perhaps?

There is a difference between a sea trial and a demo. Generally when a deposit has been taken it is on the understanding that the boat is what the buyer wants and the sea trial, and usually survey, are part of the checking process, ie survey defects = reduction in price, sea trial defects = reduction in price. Not fancy boat 'cause it turns a bit sharpish or pounds alot = confusion. Demo is exactly that and well worth doing as buyer is re-assured about boat, but because of the amount of dosh involved is worth trying to qualify prospect first. Always have cleared funds before releasing boat - this is advice from broker, who wouldn't take a draft from me.

I would only have cleared funds, not even a bankers cheque.
It's only £15000 which isn't alot in boating terms but it's alot to me so will be mega careful..... the sale is paying for my course at the UKSA.

£15k is alot in any consumer terms, my last boat went for £13k in the end. Had two "absolutely definate will buy" timewasters, ended up selling boat to partly interested who had test sail then was so happy didn't bother with survey, then I was happy!

At this end of the market downside is you will get more timewasters, upside is they are keener and less boatwise (generally!)

On the other hand, isn't it funny how after you've viewed boat, broker calls and all sorts of other interest has suddenly materialised and you must decide immediately! Or vendor may be taking it off the market unless he get's offer soon, or vendor is taking boat to spain so you better be quick or...

Funny thig that, Its a neat description of what happened to me and my purchase. Odd since the original story was that I would get a good deal because nobody else seemed interested, no offers etc.
