We have similar sailing habits to you, currently on US East Coast. Have Furuno. Has never given problem and only piece of kit a confirmed electronics Luddite like me has ever been able to set up and run without hours of anguish and phone call to help line.

Have also found Grundig Yachtboy SSB Rx at about $130 from defenderUS.com very useful for weather and news etc.

Based on the YM review I bought the Furuno NX300, has worked very well, I turned everything on so I got every message from everywhere, I felt better about spending so much when I saw how much data was there, Later I spent some time disabling it all, Rig moves off Norway didnt seem too much of a threat to me in liverpool. It's an excellent piece of kit, but I was very dissapointed that you have to manually change freq for local broadcasts, something you are unlikley to do in practice.
