This week-end we bring Corsair back home to Chichester from Plymouth. So what is the wind going to do??? Sods law with all this high pressure about it will be easterly, so depriving us of a last blast for the season.

Ideally - with a strong crew we want 6 - 8 South West (not an AWB!). Forecasts however seem all over the place at the moment.

Any bets on the wind

Take a look at http://www.windguru.cz

It's the most accurate site I've seen. Looks likely to be Westerly from Saturday.

An interesting site. I usually use http://www.theyr.net which is only a 3 days forecast, but I think has been under predicting the wind strength by up to a force recently, especially inshore and during easterlies. I'll see what it says on Thursday. Bill Giles reckons it will turn "unsettled" after this w/e so plenty of strong westerlies come November.

Used to look regularly at theyr but it takes an age to look several days ahead whereas windguru is immediate and all on one page.

Superb Site

It looks superb - any idea which of the wind areas on his menu would do for the Harwich approaches area?

My info says that the wind will back steadily from Friday. By Noon Friday there will be some West in an essentially northerly wind, and continue to about NW, possibly decreasing F3/4 overnight. From early Saturday the wind should build, to F5 perhaps 6 on headlands anbe mainly between W and NW (a bit flatter than if it was SW).

The plan implies you may well need to gybe after Portland having tucked in behind the Shambles. I havent got a full set of waypoints plumbed in for Plymouth, so cant look at the whole trip at the moment. I'd lay money that you'll want to be careful at Start, very careful at Portland, and not ignore Anvill as there will be something close to 3 knots of tide....

Star rating ?

Intreresting site once I figured out the English translation. Up to then I thought you were having us on. What do the stars mean? Is it reliability of the forecast or what?

Definitely going to require some careful nav - mind you I have always enjoyed going straight through the rough bit at Anvil.

However looks like we might ger the wind we want!

wind changing?

Comparing today's and yesterday's forecasts on windguru and weatheronline it now looks like less northerly 5-6 and more westerly 4-5 through Wight on Saturday (but still 5-6 + rain between 1800 and 2400) and W-NW (not NW-NE) 4-5 on Sunday. Weatheronline indicates a lot more wind offshore though. Theyr is only up to Friday but is in rough agreement with them so far. Looks like we'll poke our nose out into the solent on Saturday, hopefully see you going past then or on our return on Sunday. Hopefully it won't be the usual F5 northerly coming out of Chichester on Sunday, it'd be nice to sail back in without the engine this time.

<it'd be nice to sail back in without the engine this time. > wait till Hayling Island Sailing Club has finished racing!!!!!

At least its not Easterly - 15 knots Friday, 10 sat and more on Sunday. Probably too much on the beam for a spinnaker. Had been hoping for a real blast top end the season!

Looks like we'll be passing somewhere en route, I'm taking mine to plymouth from Exmouth for the winter and Saturday is looking favourite.

Re: wind changing?

Sadly looks like the wind is doing a runner - I now doubt you will see much more than 15 knots (and from time to time much less), and there will be much more North in it than previously indicated. Mind you if the wind is lighter it will be better there than too far aft.

Re: wind changing?

Hi - probably wont see you as we are leaving Plymouth Friday V early, to get to Weymouth then Yarmouth then Southsea Marina. So leasurley cruise. I don't like overnght passages at this time of year as the noghts are just too long.

Have a good trip - probably by Iron Jib???

Re: wind changing?

And will probably be too close for the spinnaker too. Suspect it will be a case of the Iron Jib as we have to average 6 knots to get to Weymouth at a half decent time - for a night out in the Black Dog - and take part in the grab a granny contest.

Must see your new boat sometime - love to have a go (as would my brother)
