Just watched dispatches on tv tonight and the middle class unemplyment. Oh god got me thinking all over again about the sick condition of this country..... Anyway I wonder what the learned experienced forumites feel on here about this being a poor time to change / buy a new boat. What will all this do to our sport and to future values etc. Should we worry about boating next year

cut backs may be inevitable, but maybe marinas will have to get real as well. For me lifting out went up 6% and fees up 3.6%. Not fair.

But who would lay out cash for a boat in todays market.

Should we worry about boating next year

Worry?

about what?

Next year will arrive and we'll all be looking forward to the new season and then the politicians will start their Bull**** all over again and feck every thing up with a general election, and for years to come blame the last lot that was in power, like they seem to do, over and over and over again.

Voting is just false hope given to the masses, we vote, they just up the tax, happens every time without fail.

so what's to worry about?

just enjoy your boating.

Looks like we just bought a new boat, got £25k less for ours than we would like, & paid about £30k less for the new one than they would like, so all relative really. Just don't try & sell to get out as you will loose at the mo. IMO when this is all over there will be a shortage of boats both new & used so things will come back up again. In our business (transport) we have noticed a considerable improvement recently particularly in moving car parts & exports, so all is not doom & gloom. We are actually advertising for drivers right now !

well, as long as you stay within whatever you decide you can "afford", I d just get on and enjoy, whether thats keeping or changing.
If its more fun having money in the bank, do that instead ! Whatever happens, you know a boat isnt much of a financial investment strategy, so I wouldnt spend too many hours trying to plot 2010 economics.Who knows...

Yes it is if you are willing to do the leg work!

Just completing on one which has lost the owner over €40,000 since January 2009! Great deals in the Med but at those prices boats are snapped up in days. I was the first to see mine and offered a fair price less than two hours later and it was accepted. The two previous ones I was looking at went within hours as well, before i made an offer.

Unfortunately Middle Classes are suffering all over Europe and they have to sell the most Liquid asset...and that is often the boat cheaply. The UK Market has been hammered by Europeans buying and so good quality boats at good prices are rare. However keep your eyes open and be ready to offer and buy on the same day and great deals do come up.

It took me 4 months of Internet watching and Broker smoosing to get the boat I wanted! Feeling very happy and at the price I paid feel very comfortable. As always if you put the effort in you will most likely get a great deal...unfortunately it will be at some one elses expense.

Good luck

Paul

**** me, you finally bought a boat! Are you sure it's only 4 months, seems more like 4 years :-) Anyway, congratulations, so what is it and photos please ...

Congratulations Nautorius......

To be fair to other potential boat buyers, from where I'm sitting, your knowledge of the local market could be described as quite 'advanced'.

Maybe even a role as a consultant/buyers agent in the near future? ;)

All will soon be revealed....I want to be sat on her when I tell you guys...it has been a tough struggle trying to get what I want at the price and do not want to Jinx it! She is in Spain at the moment (Left her in Soto after Survey and Sea Trial...not sure where she is today!) but will be in Queensway Gibraltar outside my Lounge window next week once she is mine (and I find her!)!

To be honest this is my 9th Main boat in 11 years and the reason it has taken so long is that I have been buying 'put me on' boats until I was sure what I wanted. To give you an idea it is 44ft and European. Also a 2006 model (and yes I am now broke). I am very excited... and it is suitable for the larger seas around here.

I am happy to help anyone out...buy me a beer if it works out! I have good local knowledge now and thin shoe soles! I have had to kick a lot of Fenders on shoddy boats though...
