Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

Do I try to get the boat back to Fleetwood so that I can park her in David Moss's fine wee yard and get some jobs done on her - or do I leave her at Kilmelford and get the yard to do some of the Jobs?
Cannot get the time to sail her back until October 24th.

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

Depends on how much sailing you've done this summer if it was me wait until the end of October and sail her up to David Moss's. Save yourself some money and have some fun at the same time.
You never know the weather could have improved by then and you'll have an indian summer up there or you could log an 'Ice Cruise' as another adventure.

Only a thought

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

Fit Ice breakers at the bows.. and wait and see what seems best..

All depends on the work you want done or DIY.. if complex ask yard?.. assess timescales for work... if v time consuming consider whether you will be able to do this yourself given other commitments..

Another factor is the weather this winter.. we are apparently in for a "big" winter this year....

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

Always choose the option that needs a delivery trip. That way you can give it top priority, compared to a jolly, and push yourself into the kind of sail you would otherwise avoid.

Example this year - I looked in North Wales and the East Coast for a boat I wanted to keep in Brighton. I told myself it was because South Coast boats were more expensive, but really I wanted the excuse of a trip. I'm now pondering whether I should sail the boat round to Greenwich, where I live, in the Spring to fit it out near home, then sail it back again.

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

Depends where you live...could not be too far away from my boat over the winter.. so therefore if Fleetwood is closest to you go for that option, at least you will know the job is done well if either you do it or are there to oversee it. Late October can be fine for a passage, did a few good miles last October up here on the Clyde...by the way was born and bred just down the coast from Fleetwood at St Annes.

Paul.

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

I'd sail her down to the Ribble and put her in Douglas River boat yard and get loads of jobs done very cheaply indeed. Supervise the liftout becuase they have dropped a few clangers, and a boat praps, ahem, but the current team of carpenters and painters etc are quite good imho

Axshully there is a boat in Dunstaffnage (sp?) -not sure if that's near you? - on which they have done lots of carpentry work plus full awlgrip last winter. Silver Dee, take a look if nearby.

My geography is a bit rubbish, dunno how close Fleetwood/Douglas River are. It's near Tarlton, about 10miles North of Southport, i think, so 30min drive from chez Claymore? Not sure...

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

well put it this way if you kept Claymore at Kilmelford and there was a landslide on one of the roads you could be scuppered however on the other hand Seun is over wintering at Kilmelford..

Just looked up where Fleetwood is .. it's a fair hike up to Kilmelfod.. on a short winters day.. mmmm I think I would be heading south..

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

I'd sail her down to the Carribean .. much warmer and a good excuse for some rum to warm you up whilst doing the winter tasks like anrifouling

Re: Another \'big\' winter?

Well we have snow forcast for November.. if September is anything to go by wild.. these are rumours hasten to add from the folks up here .. Rowan trees are totally laden which is supposed to indicate a hard winter..

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

St Annes posh??? guess you must be thinking of Lytham!...then I suppose anything after Fleetwood could be considered posh, a little changed now since the days of the "Ross Revenge" and the rest of the Icelandic fleet.

Re: CAQ

If October 24th the only window, depends on the forecast? But, with all flaps down, windows shut and the heater working should be a breeze. Fleetwood or bust.

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

Why don't you assist Claymore with the delivery ... you being such strong buddies.. and with your snoozemaster cross channel experience I'm sure Claymore would appreciate your help..

Re: Time for Claymore\'s Annual Quandary

Well David has a small business and he is an excellent boatbuilder with skills that are probably fast disappearing. When the David Moss's of the world have gone I doubt whether we'll see their like again, so I'd put my boat there and pay him the not unreasonable fee for doing so.
His turnover must have been sorely depleted by the activities of the Yacht Club which I disagree with but which I suppose is life in a blue suit. They are a wealthy voluntary organisation, David is a craftsman running a small business battling against a local authority and all manner of odds. Thats why.
