IIRC one of the esteemed forumites managed to get his 'pitted' tilt ram piston rods re-chromed.

Any indications as to who or where/
Thks

PS if anyone needs the special tool to remove the end caps, i've got one that makes the job a doddle!

.
Call your local hydraulics workshop, they do this sort of thing every day and should be able to put you in touch with the nearest ram re conditioner.

Have done this in Oz, no problems and much cheaper too.

Avagoodweekend......:)

Hi,
As mentioned in my PM it was us.
May well want to borrow your "tool" as we've just been charged £50 for an agent to do it.
Is it also helpful for re-tightening the caps?

Piece of p**s!
I was expecting a 4hr struggle and much cursing!
Instead took all of about 15 mins for all 4 and that included removing the tilt pins!

Can meet you somewhere midway .... Redditch? if you want to borrow it. Its down at the boat at the moment but back in 2 weeks.

Hi,
We won't want to use it 'til Easter at the earliest as we won't be going down to Devon again until then. My partner in crime lives in Dudley, so depending on where you are then there may be somewhere more convenient for you than Redditch.
We'll keep in touch.
Thanks

Aaaaaagh, where's me medication??

Sorry Tico, I've been leading you astray here. We originally thought that the rams were chrome finished. However, on taking them to the friend of a friend he categorically assured us that they were polished SS.
So, what he did was weld along the score marks and then carefully re-polish them back to their original size/state. Afraid I'd forgotten this as it was yet another quirk in the long running saga of our leaking rams.

If we are talikng DP-E i have just changed mine two weeks ago i managed to get an old set of rams and have reworked with Hardchrome they are not this as standard, it appears that they are stainless.I did encounter a problem undoing the caps using 4mm silversteel pins they bent had to drill out to
5mm easy then. The spanner i made up was picking up on three of the holes as well.Ifound that one of the nylon spring retainers was broken had to turn a new one up on the lathe.Hopefully everything is now OK i only changed the outer scaper seal 24mm x16mm x4mm wide with a stainless spring as i did not have a problem with them losing pressure.
