Tilley Hat - RIP

My deepest condolences.

I get all my hats from the army surplus store with a maximum price of £5 for a rather dashing "legionaries baseball hat", the one with the cloth that covers the neck and ears. A zillion times better at protecting my big jug ears from UV than the Tilly, while some say I look even more stupid than usual I prefer the lack of sunburn.

How do you get sunburn in Scotland, is it a special bank holiday?

Mine blew off going down Dover Harbour. Port control had asked us to make best speed to the entrance but I still went back for it.

I have four Tilley hats. One 22 year old one, complete with holes that have worn through, one replacement under guarantee last year because of said holes, one birthday present and one Airflow acquired specially for the ARC last year which proved to be excellent in warmer climes. Unfortunately none of them are blue, so maybe a fifth is in the offing. I also have a couple of lookalikes acquired when I’ve gone sailing without the real thing. Being folically challenged up top being without headgear in anything other than the rain is a bit of a no-no.

The same way as you get sunburn in any other part of the world. :D

I understand you have not had the delight of a Scottish summer; the occasional week once a decade.

They do float, and if your telephone number is written in it you may well get it back. Mine blew off leaving Portsmouth harbour, I received a call 2 weeks later. It had been picked up by a kayaker the other side of Bembridge.

I found one on a beach under similar circumstances. Poor bugger was well pi55ed off because his wife had bought it for him (and had written in the phone number). But he hated it and had 'accidentally' lost it overboard.

Ha! I gave my ‘finder’ sufficient beer tokens for a decent bottle of wine for returning it, I hope you received same for keeping quiet! ?

Acknowledging the “To each their own” principle, i still maintain that Tilley hats are the best thing, possibly, since the invention of the boat.

My summer one (T3) is never far from me and this winter I discovered a tech-wool winter hat that has joined the collection (of two). They are both amazing hats and I love them to bits.

My new Tilley hat (birthday present) is in my suitcase somewhere between Dubrovnik and Gatwick or maybe in some other airport anywhere in the world. So far I have failed to find anyone at BA who can recognise the baggage identification tag that they themselves attached at the airport. The number on the tag can't be entered into their computer system and therefore I can't register it as missing.

Just to update, I received my new Tilley today as a replacement for my 24 year old one. A company that will honour a guarantee after 24 years with no quibbles deserves praise (and support). Thanks Tilley!
PS They even returned the old one as requested.

That's good to know although I'm not sure I'll still be wearing mine in 24 years time. At least I got it back (plus my suitcase) from BA although their customer service department was totally useless. Their last advice was to travel to the nearest airport and fill in a lost luggage form at the BA customer services desk. Considering that I couldn't find anyone to help at Gatwick, what chance would I have at Bouremouth or Exeter?

I saw one at Ramsholt on the mud at low water last Sunday - obviously blown off and landed in the mud. Very soft that mud so I didn't try and retrieve it.
