No its not. I can get very fine control of the tension on mine.

Horses for courses I suppose. I simply find the midshipman does the job far better than anything else I have used. (And I have had several over the years on different boats.) As a matter of fact my current boat had a Davies Tiller Tamer fitted when I bought it, and I changed it to a Midshipman (mainly because I had a spare one available removed from a previous boat).
