Hi,

Has anyone ventured through the swatchway this year yet ??

Planning to move boat from FYH to another location and would like to save the hour(s) having to go up to Barrow No.2 & Foulgers.

Any crossing recommendations appreciated.

I'm sorry not to have a chance to have a look this year yet: wooden boat needing a minor but timd consuming repair - hindered by the low temperatures in the last two weeks; too cold to epoxy and paint.

I suspect it might be possible to still do the SW Sunk but slightly further to the NE. But that's a feeling NOT evidence. I appreciate everybody will be on a passage rather than having hunt around. My plan is to re-survey in the second half of the month (weather now looking good to paint) and I will report immediately. I had hoped the PLA would have been able to give a quick look but obviously they haven't been able to do that.

I know a couple of people that came over at the weekend using the same track as last year. They didn't report any problems. I will try to find out what state of tide and depths seen

I got some quick responses back. Of the two boats that came over at the weekend on last year's track, the most pessimistic of the two was seeing no less than 4m depth with 1.3m of tide. Looks good to me.

That's great news S-B, thanks for posting that.

Hope to be passing that way tomorrow :-)

Have a good passage - and any info would be useful.

I have now screwed the wooden boat back and painting starting. Now a need a low pressure over the second set of springs in May so I can get off. Could you all breath in together please when the time is due.

Has anyone tried a passage NE of last years coordinates? I am aware of a boat this weekend that very carefully tried the old route at LW neaps and touched the bottom. Is there any update on when it will be surveyed?
Many thanks for any advise

1. The latest information is that staying on the rhumb line brings a shallow patch and several have touched;
2. It is said that some (possibly only two people) have been successful. I suspect this is by moving to the NE but I have no information;
3. As I said I am expecting to be finishing fitting-out and getting off at the second set of springs. If that works I am planning to get down there on Monday 30th May subject to weather.

Are you able to comment as to whether the Sunk Sand route as shown on your web site is still viable, please? I'm heading for Ramsgate and on to Oostende at the weekend and would prefer to avoid the SW Sunk in view of your comments. I estimate that I would be at either the Sunk Sand or SW Sunk 3 hours after HW. I draw 4.5 ft.

Thanks, Rog. Seven boats from FMYC is a great effort. Nothing to do with the Belgian beer, of course.

Beginning to think I might revert to Plan A which is a non-stop from the Blackwater to Oostende. Tiring when single-handing but easier than crossing the Thames en-route.

I cannot add to my posting an hour earlier than yours. I have some third party comments that the SW Sunk is possible but I have no information on detail - such has state of the tide, draft, position. There is, however, clear information that last year's recommended rhumb line goes over a VERY shallow patch. The shape of the swatch is very steep-to side on the south-west, more 'seaside beach' to the north-east. I suspect the winter has just moved the swatch towards the north-east but it could also have narrowed or closed the swatch. Until I get there I regret I cannot give any information. The safe choice is the Sunk Sand (the Little Sunk) as it is a stable area.

I can say that my fitting-out (dare I admit repairs) are finishing and should subject to a higher enough tide gets me into commission next Monday (23rd). The plan is to re-survey on Monday 30th May when I can get down there at low water. I like to be able to see the knolls to follow the shape (and get a tide helping down and back). So I am hoping the weather will be kind to give me smooth enough water to survey.

Very many thanks for your response. I think I will err on the side of caution and use a different route.

Seems you've had the same frustrations as me over this year's refit. Glad to hear you're nearly finished. Hope to see you on the water.

They have clearly ignored the Navionic chart but the depths on the Navionics are a little odd and there is no reference to my chartlet last year. So it is uncertain which co-ords they used. I shall send a message to see if I can find out. Again, it seems it is viable - if we only need where it is!

Well Roger, I can guarantee the chartlet is on the C Map charts, but only when you zoom in a bit to be fair. But crossing there I always have the plotter zoomed quite high anyway.
