I have a Moody 29, transom hung rudder with tiller. I would like to add a tiller extension and wonder if people have any recommendations for makes/sources? It is a 3 ton boat so it needs to be fairly robust, but doesn't have to be too elaborate- I just want enough reach to be able to sit up on the side coaming and get up to the spray hood from time to time to check the chartplotter more closely.

I made one with a spare piece of iroko. You can get a stainless swivel thingy from the chandler's to do the connection to the exisiting tiller. Shape one end of the wood to fit that and the other to fit your hand. TG is 8 tons - but well balanced and she doesn't need anything too dramatic.

Would agree with Spinlock. Mine's at least ten years old and is going strong.

Was sailing on a friend's AWB the other week - his Wichard tiller extension is three years old, with only light use but the telescopic action has gone completely.

I would join the recommendations for spinlock. Its easy to remove to can be nicked so take it off when you leave the boat. It stops the UV getting at the plastic bits which can break. Used on lots of race boats so will be good. They have a good handle at the end to make them easy to hold if your helm is at all heavy.

Personally I don't like the spade type grip like the Spinlock, or the "ladder" type.

We have a tubular extension using dinghy hardware with flexible plastic universal joint. We have a 3 ton bilge keeler but the helm's pretty light so I don't feel the need for anything heavier-duty.

Thanks everyone.

Spinlock seems to be favourite. I have looked on the web and it seems to be available in both the asymetric hoop and straight handle versions. Not cheap tho- about 80 quid is the best I could find for the smallest model. I do like the option of a telescopic extension and it does look as if it is pretty robust. I fear my practical skills are a bit doubtful for a DIY solution, so as it stands , I think I will probably go with Spinlock.

Thanks again. Virtual beers only I'm afraid

I saw a brilliant hand crafted extension recently.
It had a handle from an umbrella, a shaft from a 5 iron, and what appeared to be a door hinge from B&Q.
The true spirit of Practical Boat owning.
JDS would have been proud.
