Would a strong peg with 'teeth' work almost as well but without the neatness

I have not seen the PBO review but I image it would enable the control line to remain tensioned over the normal range of tiller movement without constantly frigging about adjusting it in the cam cleats on the coaming
 
Length of bungee, short length of small link stainless chain - stainless bolt and butterfly nut.
Less than a tenner - job done.

Fiddling about undoing a butterfly nut shifting the bolt to another link in the chain then refitting the butterfly nut hardly compares with the ease of squeezing a lever, moving the tiller and releasing the lever again.

++1 I have a similar device, called a Midshipman: literally a flick of the finger and the tiller is held where I want it. Another flick frees it off again. No messing about. Wouldn't be without it particularly single handing.

Tried all the other diy systems, forever faffing about to get it right. I can't be doing with that. Flick, its on, flick its off. Even the autopilot doesn't do it so well. Of course it wont hold a long term course like the autopilot, but I don't always have the ap out, particularly if I'm just pottering round the harbour.
 
Funny - I sailed back from southern Portugal solo including Biscay crossing using the faffing about DIY contraption and don't recall having to alter it that often. Of course if you're changing course often then the ready made non faffing models are the thing to have. Same principal less money, this the Pratical boat owner forum after all.
 
It's available in the UK from Force4 but I wonder whether most people on this forum would benefit from the TillerClutchX version which has a meatier clutch action ?

Will be asking the question tomorrow at SIBS if the X model would be better for a Moody 31.

Boo2, I have spoken to Force 4 who tell me that they are sold out owing to the PBO report and expect another delivery in 6-8 weeks!!!!! I have therefore contacted WaveFrontMarine in the US asking them if they can get an X model to me quicker and also if it is suitable for a Moody 31. Will update when a reply is received.
 
I purchased the X version for my 26' Griffon direct from the US. Arrived in 5 days including a weekend.
Fitted last week end.
Really good when almost single handed (my 9 year old can't see over the spay hood!)
Much easier than faffing around with bungee or the auto helm.

Andrew, out of interest did you use the Standard Shipping or the Express Shipping service?
 
I am helping a mate at the moment build an electronic version. He has a tiller with underdeck linear drive Raymarine autopilot. We have rigged a squeeze switch which puts the autopilot into standby. On release, the autopilot goes back to the whatever mode it was before (i.e. heading or wind angle). The idea is that when single-handing, he can grab the tiller and helm whenever he can, but then can release it to attend to sail trim etc, and then come back to the helm.

The biggest problem we are having is making the squeeze switch reliable.
