Tie bow lines to rails when underway?

That's interesting.. You loop the entire coil through itself.. That should be pretty secure..

That's what I meant by cow-hitching the coil.
If you don't get hold of the whole coil properly when undoing it in the dark it can turn into a bugger's muddle though.

sa already said, it is a useful way to tidy the roller reefing line. In fact I simply clove hitch the tail onto the rail and the figure eight stops it working loose. Making ready for sea isn't an absolute and in fairly calm conditions or pottering on the river I will leave the mooring lines rigged and hitched to the rail, but they are removed should conditions change. It has saved me once when the engine stopped unexpectedly motoring down river and we were able to immediately unfurl the genoa and sail onto the nearest vacant pontoon. How do you look nonchalant when refuelling?

Rob.

I coil the bow and stern lines then use the end to secure them to their cleats. I can't see the point any more in taking ropes off and storing them - or doing any more with fenders than pulling them over the rails and letting them lie on the side decks, except in very extreme conditions. My 25 year old self would have been appalled.

That's a cow hitch isn't it?
