Today it’s been a very high tide in Stoke and my neighbour drove over and asked me about the tide, I told him it was a spring tide he replies but it is winter. I could not explain why they are called spring and neaps. Any ideas.

Just tell him it is a very high high tide except for when it is a very low high tide or a very high low tide except for when it is a very low low tide.
This occurs twice a month except when it is once a month depending on the calendar except when certain months excepted.

A spring tide is called that because the word "spring" is an older term from the old english / german word "springan" which means to "leap up," not because it happens in the spring season. The name refers to the tides "springing forth" with greater force, causing higher high tides and lower low tides. This happens when the sun, Earth, and moon align during the new or full moon, causing their gravitational pulls to combine

Seacock……theres a thing called google. Give it a try

They are called spring tides because they have sprung up a bit higher than a normal one.

That reminds me of an old mate Boobs. He was sunbathing on a beach in France
A blonde lady walks past and smiles and says hello
He thinks his luck is in, and says hi do you want to join me
So she lies down and asks him have you ever been kissed
He replies, no , would you .
So she smothers him with kisses, then asks, have you had your balls stroked.
He thinks ,then replies No
So she strokes his Crown Jewels , then asks have you ever been tied up.
He is now aroused, and says No ,
So she ties him down spread eagled , he cannot move .
She then asked have you ever been f###££d
He thinks better lie , and says No
