Just a passing thought.

I am reminded by my good friend Proudman that 2 March 2010 will, most likely, see a Tidal Range at Avonmouth of about 14.59m. - with a ELWS Height ( ! ) of -0.11m.

That's around 48 feet 8 inches, in old money, and a whole lot of water to go charging back and forth in just 6 hrs 20-ish minutes.

Strangely, Newport - just across the way - has about 1 metre less range, but an ELWS Height ( ! ) of -0.53m, or about 20 inches below Chart Datum.

The tide will be 'overtopping' substantially at Bristol, and a fair few other places, especially if there's a westerly wind of any weight, and/or low pressure around.

Book your seats for the biggest Severn Bore of the year ! March 3. A real 5 star guaranteed humdinger, thousand of surfers and canoeists all swept up in a disastrous maelstrom, debris hurtling up the river, and then down again. Oh Gloom.

Should we have a Bristol Channel (rescue) party ?

There was a warning on Ch16 by the CG on Saturday just gone, for a Negative tidal surge in the Thames area. They defined a negative tidal surge as a tide that would be appreciably lower than that predicted, anyone in the Thames area notice anything?

We had dinner near the Tate Modern on Saturday evening after visiting the boat show. One of the topics of conversation was how we'd never seen the river so low ... goes to show it wasn't the booze after all.
