Hi all
Been looking at the reenial problem of batter charging and an idea occured which someone else might have tried. I will be using a towed genorator to provide power underway which gives 4-6A at cruising speed, ideal. At anchor this can be converted to a wind genny but on a tipical spot only prodeces a small amount of power intermitently when wind blows - not ideal. So what about? there is plenty of energy there for example on mt current mooring I have more than 2kn for about 12 out of every 24h but comercial systems dont kick in till about 3kn with the low speed turbines. So can I get or develope a turbine that will give the rquired revs (about 600) in a 2kn flow? anyone tried it. My initial thought are either a large fine pitch prop espended below a float so it dosnt sink at slack water or some form of funel to accellerate tide up to 4+ kn, possibly something like a conventional drogue.

Interesting idea! Never heard it being tried though - perhaps because only a very few cruising grounds worldwide have moorings or anchorages exposed to strong tides. As you say, it calls for an exceptionally large, fine-pitched prop. Neither of the two systems I'm familiar with would be suitable for adaptation. AquaGen requires a long towed line, liable to tangle if unattended, and won't stream properly at that speed. DuoGen holds the prop in position as you want, but it is tightly engineered unit probably incapable of taking the required prop size.

Thanks for the reply, as to anchorages I like rivers and with deep draft am frequently in the spot with max flow so couple of knts is not unusual certainly around uk - not going to be much good in the med though! hadn't thought of that
