Thought I'd finally be able to refit the through - hull ball valve only to fail miserably fitting the pipe to the valve. Tried dunking it in hot water, soapy liquid on the valve and it just got stuck half way. Cut it off, tried again with a squirt of WD40 on the valve with the same result, it just will not go on. Any suggestions?

any chance of a closeup pic of that valve and the handle at some stage, please ?

Did you buy and fit it yourself, or was it already there ?

I tend to be very wary of redpainted levers and what they are connected to.....

Hot water not enough. You need boiling water but then there is a serious scalding risk. Also necessary to warm the valve or the pipe will cool too quickly.

Hot air gun is safer and makes it easier to warm the valve too
 
What's the specific name of that kind of pipe by the way? I haven't been very lucky at finding any like it so far.
 
Many thanks all. I don't, of course, have a heat gun. Would a small, carefully applied blow torch be too much?

I do have a close - up of the valve on another thread. It's a DZR valve connected to a mushroom type through hull fitting.

Sorry, I don't know what type of pipe it is, it was already fitted.

tapered softwood bung/stretcher
heat the end of the pipe in boiling water whip it out & insert the stretcher as far as you can, remove the stretcher & push over the spigot, tighten hose clips asap before it fully cools

Right, fair enough, I don't have a softwood spigot either so heat gun it is!

EDIT: £8.99 from Screwfix, I've paid more than that for a drill bit in the past!!!

Thanks all, heatgun is on order, it's being collected tomorrow.

Funnily enough I was looking at glue lined heat shrink connectors earlier, they look extremely useful.
 
ideally it needs heating and use a screwing action when fitting, may be a 4 handed operation . Is it possible to start afresh and put the valve end on first then the other end?

It probably would have been, but I've put the ball valve on quite tightly. So tightly, in fact, that I broke a piece of the lug off the inside of the through-hull fitting. I'm sure it would come off, but I'd rather avoid it!
Access to it isn't actually too bad, you can get 4 hands on it. The last failed attempt was with me pushing my not inconsiderable weight down on it whilst my Wife wrenched it to and fro but it still wouldn't go on.

Still, hopefully zapping it with the heat gun will sort it. If not, I'll have to blank off the hole and hang the waste pipe out of the window...

Not so clear from picture, but IMHO you have a valve spigot (or however that's called) screwed-on to valve - still you may take this spigot off the valve, insert into pipe at your leisure (and at pot of boiling water) heating both pipe and spigot. Then screw the whole lot down again. Easier way.

PS. Note that you are pushing warm pipe onto a pound of brass - quite a great material for heat conducting and dissipating... Better to put a piece of brass into a kettle instead of trying to heat big portion of boat :p
