Thuraya satsleeve / satsleeve hotspot

.
Seems like a relatively cheap and hassle-free way of keeping in touch offshore. Anyone used this system?

Yep, I've got one. Only used it a couple of times, works ok. I think if I was buying again I would probably buy a dedicated satphone rather than an additional device like the satsleeve, but it all depends on what application you have in mind for it. Check that the coverage area is what you need (I wanted Europe/Med, which is fine, but it doesn't cover the US, for example).

As Jimmy says, check the coverage map. Thuraya’s intended for land use and uses focussed beams to achieve that, with only limited overspill into the oceans.

OK, that's interesting. It was mostly as a backup for across Biscay and from Portugal to Madeira or the Canaries.

Better with Iridium I guess, but I don't want a one month plan and the others are very expensive.

Do what I did, buy a cheap Delorme, now Garmin, Inreach, pay to set it up then switch the account off after the biggies. One of our fellow forumites is offshore Cuba, I am sending them weather etc as and when they want it.
Easy peasy.
