Through the Thames Barrier with a Wayfarer...

Sailing? Or with a powerful outboard on the back??
There are sailing clubs near there that have Wayfarers.
If a Wayfarer can sail around the UK or to Norway, I am sure it can get through a Thames Barrier at the right stage of the tide.

http://www.pla.co.uk/assets/NEW_Inner_PRINT_FINAL.pdf is the official information. VHF not required, mobile telephone is an alternative and even that's not compulsory. A dinghy etc should use the starboard-most span marked as open by green arrows. If a working engine is fitted it should be used, ie if no engine, sail is possible. However, knowing the wind and currents through the Barrier, I'd say it's not really ideal.

We took two disabled sailors through and up into the Pool back in 2014. They seemed to enjoy it and they kept a good look out, staying tucked into the banks. The concept of power gives way to sail did not come up at any point and the law of the jungle ruled!!
