evening all!

Just when I thought things couldn't get any worse, with two lousy seasons boating behind me, a new LPG system and various other expensive solutions to improve the boat, that I decided a service of my Holley carbs may finaly eliminate a persistant stalling and rough idol on my 570a Volvo's.

With care and attention I removed the first Holley no problem, the second, all bolts removed, I tapped the sides to break the seal and went to lift the Carb, only, one of the wing feet on the Throttle body plate, had developed metal fatigue and stayed put as the carb was removed.

Not a problem in the scheme of things, just a phone call to Volvo and a lumpy cheque and a new plate would be on it's way,.. ah! but wait were talking about Volvo here!. Turns out Volvo no longer supply the caburettor, parts or even service kits for the unit and could only suggest the replacement by way of two new carbs as fitted to later engine types.

Talked to many a helpful soul including guys from MMS direct and even a member of the Volvo UK service team added his full assistance, in the end however no other alternative was suggested but to replace the carbs.

Have corresponded with Holley in the states and they may be able to help with the throttle body plate replacement, but after duties, freight and the cost of parts and then getting the carbs serviced, I won't be looking far short of the cost of new carbs anyway.

Sorry to grizzle on for my first posting, but sums up this boating experience so far. Only soldier on in the hope that I may experience some of the more interesting adventures other forum members seem to enjoy!.

A short cautionary note is "if you run Petrol engines with Holleys 4160's, hope you don't have any problems, because Volvo won't be able to help you."

Oh well off to smile at the bank manager again.
Keep up the inspiration

Steve

Sorry to hear about your troubles, with MMS, have a chat with Lawrence at the Marlow branch - he's ex volvo and knows a thing or two, may even be avble to get you them at a better price.

Failing that the only other suggestion I have is the American cars clubs you may find that you can get better priced parts through them. I have a book that covered the Rochester 2GE on my old V6 that mention Holley's I think. I'll check.

Peter

Not everything is black and white if you prove otherwise you’ll get run over on a zebra crossing

Its not just parts for Holleys that are not supplied anymore. I have Twin down draught solex installation on my engine. With the problems that I have had with the cylider head latley, the carbs had to come off. Ithought it would be a good idea to give tham a clean and service while waiting for the head to come back from the machine shop. Big mistake, strip'em clean'em, cant put them back together because volvo stopped doing the service kits for them. Same answer from volvo tho, "we can sell you a new set for £650+ vat". You may be able to get round your problem tho by giving Real Steel a call. They are in Uxbridge West London but I dont have their number. Most of the Holleys used by Volvo are more or less the same as used by the original engine manufacturer. In your case probably its a GM V8 that you have. Give them a call as the parts you require are probably available of the shelf at half the Volvo price. Good luck

Smile. its only money!

Another thought is to have a replacement engineered. Dont know if it's practical, without seeing it. But I've got blokes who can recast most things quite cheaply, if it cant just be machined.

No one can force me to come here-----------

Re: alternatives?

Steve, could you get a specialist welder to weld or braze the broken bit back on, then surface grind/skim the face so it is flat again? Would be pretty cheap, and quite easy. Not sure what metal it is - steel developments can do aluminium work to very high standard, and cheap

Ring Real steel in Uxbridge, they are Holley dealers, and can supply what you want at a fraction of Volvo's price. I use them all the time for engine parts.

BarryH, just read your post, great minds and all that!
There is a company called Eurocarb ltd in Reading, they carry loads of spares for Solex, SU, Weber etc: they should be able to sort you out.
They are just 'round the corner from me, If you are based in the Solent, I could collect for you.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will give them a try.

Re: alternatives?

JFM

Thanks for the responce. I have looked into this but the metal is a shag (and shagged!) with metal fatigue and I am reliably informed this will not take to being welded.
Of course the other issue is spares and service kits none of which are available now form Volvo and the Motor market version has differnt jets etc.

Looks like new ones beckon!.

Steve

Barry

Sorry to here youv'e vsisited a similar problem, I will contact Reel Steel, although I have been reliably informed that the Motor industry equivalent uses different jets etc. to the Marine type.

Hope the engine is sorted out now and thanks for the responce.

Your right, Have used MMS since I started this foolish hobby, Laurence and Simon at MMS have been a great help already, along with Turlough at Volvo (UK)... yes I did say Volvo.. mind you he's been the only one there interested.

Have had some techinical diagrams sent though from MMS, to see how compatable they are to current fittings and even now there may be problems as the fuel pump is totaly different.

Holley (US) have a great site although their technical dept is very slow to respond.

Anyway thanks for the advice.

A big thanks to all members who have contributed to my first post
Its' been somewhat more successful than the boating itself.

Hope to have a result very soon and will keep you updated.

Tell,em what the card is on and they'll give you the correct jetting kit. All the four barrels are mostly the same castings. I went to various carb places and found one that will either bush out my spindles or supply adapters to retro fit after market ones. Still think my injection and turbo are fine, but I cant persuede my insurance company

YEP I have two old Rochester carbs and altho I have lots of info i.e. replace with Hollies no one can give me the correct model numbers ! and yes basically the auto arb is OK with a bit of re-jetting will try Real Steel..

Re: alternatives?

If the auto jets are different (as would expect) just put your old jets into a new body from the auto supplier.

Re metal fatigue, it's must unlikely a carb body would ever suffer metal fatigue. It is not subject to any changes in stress, so it couldn't be fatigued. I wd expect the broken bit can be welded on (or brazed, if you want to keep the temp lower) for about a tenner!
