Three Peaks from Barmouth race this weekend. Am based in Holyhead and was there all day Friday and the weekend. Blowing a bustad! Saw 40kts on Friday at one point in the marina. Saturday it eased a bit but was still v blowy from the SSW. Late afternoon there was a mayday, I could just hear the yot, HH coastguard was loud and clear. They were aground in the surf off Caernarfon bar. Not a nice place to be. Eventually they got themselves off and cancelled the Mayday, a lifeboat had been launched. I did a quick google on the name White Cloud 9, they were taking part in the 3 Peaks race. I went to the website where you can see the positions and tracks of the boats. Most of the other boats tracks were north of WC9 near the entrance to the Bar. Looks as if someone was cutting a corner and had missed the Bar entrance buoy. Hohum!
They are still third overall!
Stu
PS Sad weekend, in another incident, HH lifeboat went out twice plus the paraffin budgie, two climbers found in the sea off South stack this morning, father and son had gone missing. Full climbing gear on.

One of these years, we should form a team, Stu. I don't mind doing a run. Something I've always secretly fancied. Any other nutters we know wanting to put one foot forward?

PS - tragedy for the climbers / family. Very sad news.

No

I would be happy to stay on board!

We sailed through the swirly bits yesterday PM . Alongside a competitor.... We beat them to the Gazelle! Their jib looked as though it had seen a bit of action. They were also were towing the dirty water hose off the heads.. I hate to think what Drama had occurred. They couldnt stand the smell! They have made it to Whitehaven and are in 8th place.

Stu if that track information is correct they actually didnt bother using the recognised bar route.
Ok it was neaps but it appears they went straight across the south bank at low tide.. in a boat drawing 7'2" .At low water they would have had 5'4" above LWS must have bounced a fair bit on any swell..
That in my experience is just plain foolhardy. Not an acceptable risk which I would take with my family on board on a calm day.
You would think the skipper knows his stuff as he has done it 6 times now and won it twice...

I would have thought the organisers would look pretty dimmly and certainly should penalise anybody calling a lifeboat out then cancelling.
Luck of the Irish by the looks of things.......and the crew names..

Mind you there is still time for the keel to fall off before they finish?

There was a boat stuck on Cribben rock in the Swellies yesterday. Presume they retired as a yacht, not racing, tried to tow them off.
