Frank Mulville is brilliant for sailing in British/northern European waters. His Single-Handed Sailing is a masterful insight into single-handed sailing and a wonderful guide to seamanship. Try Terschelling Sands for a ripping yarn
Bernard Moitessier, French sailing hero and guru, should be read for information and inspiration. His account of sailing round Cape Horn, “Cape Horn: The Logical Route” is very good. Other books by Bernard can get a bit over-philosophical so I recommend a brilliant book about him - Moitessier – A Sailing Legend by Jean-Michel Barrault translated by Janine Simon, published in the USA by Sheridan House.
And then there is the great and wonderfully laconic Bill Tillman.
