a) it's already ordered
b) it's cheap
c) I don't sail anywhere that ais would be useful
d) I don't have a plotter so wouldn't have a useful way of displaying the info
+1 for the GX2200E.
Mine is mounted below in a fibreglass boat.
Gets a position from the internal GPS in 30 secs.
AIS targets take a little longer as dicussed in other recent threads.
+1 for the GX1700E. Gets a good gps fix within 30 secs and provides useful readout (SOG, COG, Time and Fix for the chart table). I didn't go for the GX2200e as it was bit bulky at the chart table compared to the GX1700E (depthwise) (and I try to spend most of my time spotting other vessels from the cockpit rather than by the chart table).
