Just acquired a new boat, East coast based and thinking about a shakedown cruise Sweden/Norway/Finland before heading west. Any ideas for cruise plan/timescale. All offers gratefully rec'd

Maybe first place when arriving to Baltic could be Bornholm and to visit there the small harbours as well. Then Sweden and Simrishamn and from there over Hanöbukten towards Kalmarsund.

After that a visit to Gotland, Visby, from there through the arkhipelago passing Stocholm.

Then you could go over to Ahvenanmaa and up north through the routes between the islands popping into the small harbours on the way. Many of these small town are very unique with old center full of wooden houses.

From pietarsaari I'd go over to the Swedish coast and start sailing south.
There is the area called Höga Kusten, the islands grow up from the sea like small mountains, very nice area and for once you don't have toworry about rocks when navigating.
On the way is Öregrund that I wouldn't miss.

When passing Gotland and Bornholm you could sail on the eastern side and see different side of them.

Sailing this way round Gulf of Botnia is easier with prevailing winds.
The best sailing season is after midsummernight and then it's possible to meet other sailors as well. After mid August it's all empty when holiday season is ovetr

Hallo,
I´m a new forum member, living in Germany.
Pls. excuse, that my English is not so well, but I hope, you will understand me.....
Regarding your question because Scandinavia-trip:

I have visited Sweden-east-coast up to Stockholm last year; if you are interested you can find a lot of pictures at my side www.heinkele.net , selecting "Sommer 2006".
In addition i have the propose for the 2007 trip postet at the side. Planned is to go along the German-, Poland-, Baltic- coast to Helsinke and back via Alands, Stockholm.
My boat is a 27´ Vancouver, bought some years ago in Woodbridge, UK

The Swedish west coast area called Bohuslan which is between Gothenburg and the Norwegian border is IMHO the most beautiful sailing area in the world. You need good charts and good navigation skills though as it is rocky. About 10 000 islands to explore with lots of stunning anchorages. Marstrand is Sweden's Cowes.

Most of the other postings here talk of the longer trip round Bothnia - perhaps the more rigorous shakedown, more miles and a lot more anchorages.

But the trip around the Danish Islands offers a lot of character & history, and somewhat more people to chat to along the way!

Make for Kiel through the canal, then the choice is left or right about the central Danish islands: so, up through the Danish islands via Praesto to Copenhagen, taking in Malmo and the Swedish coast rounding north acoss to Lymfjord and then , either west out to sea and back south to Blighty or, back down teh Danish coast to Kiel past the Danish fjords - very pretty.

Of course taking in the Dutch and German Frisien islands en route is another pleasure!

Many thanks for the advice. Still very much in the incubation stage at the moment - but may well come back to you for further advice if I may
