I note with concern the comment made by obergruppenfuhrer Kim H that haydn's (hlb)remarks re volvo were uninformed and unhelpful. Harumph! Since when was being informed or being helpful a qualification to make contribution here? Useless contributions, half-baked theories and general pontificating all welcomed.

Re Cooking instructions

Agree. "Half" is the maximum degree to which anything roundabout here should be baked (or arsed, for that matter), imho.

But axshully, Haydn's comments were not really that uninformed, were they? Unhelpful (to Volvo) praps, but not uninformed. I mean I'd take a Moulinex back if it didn't run for 200 hours. (Oooh, that almost circled back nicely to cooking didn't it).

Thanks Matt. I thought that just short of ten grand for two gearboxes in my present boat, fair reason for complaint.
Oh and then there were the two that went in the last boat.
I haven't put a gear box in any other mode of transport in my life.
Looks like I was not following the Obergruppenfuhrers party line. Still fancy a Cummins next though, cant help that.

Penalty of replying at midnight I guess. What I meant was if you have specific gripes (like MS4 gearboxes I presume, a great reason for a gripe) then spell them out for the benefit of others. Bottom line is there must be more hours run by 40 series diesels in their various flavours than any other mid-range leisure diesel, certainly in Europe, so it is good to focus in a bit rather than just repeat the usual 'everything green bad' line which is of course allowable subjective opinion (I left it alone, didn't I?) but not terribly helpful to those seeking advice who are faced by nothing but.

Seems strange that whenever I talk to the fishermen, harbour masters, Pilots etc.etc they all fall about when you ask them about Volvo's in work boats or any application where a dependable / cheap to run, engine is required. Why is that?

Re: indeedy

A most interesting point Mr P. The car mags highlighjt the financial reasoning behind various engine/bodypan collusions and so on, so why not the boaty mags? For example, we now really have just a few engine manufacturers in UK boats, but reviewed as quite quite different, with each garage er manufacturer given the same design status, whereas all they have to do now is decide where the bogs go and decide on leather or not, then nail in the lectronics and blame the whole lot on the oems.

Our fline t48 was a single-option caterpillar-only engined boat till 97. Then, an amazing new option came out - volvo engines with an extra 2hp. Wd be most interesting to know how that happened. Was it really that Vovo just cut a better deal, not invoicing till sold or whatever?

Oh, and the kangeroo appeal court watchdog toothless inspection agency finds your explanation completely satisfactory, Mr H. Mind you, can't imagine that hlb will take any notice anyway ;-)

I think Matts point is Kim.
We dont go around saying to each other that there ill informed or unhelpfull if we dont agree with anything they say. We are not Shutlbuggers on here. Maybe too much of that stuff has rubbed off on you Kim! And as Matt said. We have not been informed that we need to be experts before commenting.
If this is so please advise.
I also reserve the right not to drive the 300 miles to Plymouth. Check out whether MS5 Gearboxes or other. before returning and making totally accurate comments with detailed drawings attatched.

PRM is better

If I was in that position with those Volvo boxes, which in my book is the top from an outdrive leg, lasts about the same time, then I would have put in a pair of PRM boxes, cheaper and last for ever.

Sorry Haydn, too late now.
