I just replaced the engine temp. switch so went to start the engine and nothing. Messed about with the loom and it burst into life then stopped again. It dit this a few times and when it was going the key wouldn't stop it. I thought I found the problem with the large wire going to the starter solenoid but again nothing happens now.Any ideas? The earth seems ok and there is power to the switch. In the mean time I have disconnected the temp switch to eliminate that.

You said that when it was going switching it off wouldn't stop it, shutting the fuel off is how a diesel is stopped so I don't see why the starter wiring would be the problem. If it just wouldn't start then maybe. I did have a problem the other day, boat started fine but next day wouldn't turn, bendix managed to stick overnight!

Sorry, when you said it burst into life when you messed about with the wiring I assumed you meant with the key rather than literally. If it is a standard Lucas type switch they are quite cheap so you could try just replacing it.

Just fixed it.It was the spade connector on the back of the ignition switch that had come off! All spades are now soldered to avoid future probs! Potentially very dangerous and even more so as it would more than likely happened in bad weather. Glad I found it because while tracing the fault I found a leaking hose, bad battery contact and a couple of loose engine mounts.
