Thorneycroft smoke reduction?

Hi i seem to have lost this thread but someone said that they had their injector pump serviced which reduced / removed smoke and soot? Do you have more details please?

I did, by the local Lucas CAV people. They serviced the pump and the injectors which solved my smoke problem. I also discovered that the fuel return pipe from the pump was blocked. Clearing that helped as well.

Black smoke and soot from a diesel is caused by incorrect air/fuel ratio, which occurs for a number of reasons.

Blocked air inlet filters (clean or replace)
Worn injectors passing too much fuel (check and replace)
Insufficient fuel supply due to: blocked filters, blocked fuel lines, blocked fuel tank breather, fuel line leaks.
Overloaded engine (oversize propellor, or severe drag in the transmission preventing engine from revving freely to its normal full speed)
Partial blockages in the exhaust pipe (soot, damage, overheat damage to rubber exhaust hose causing internal collapse)
Incorrectly sized high pressure fuel delivery pipes


Note that I have not included the injector pump on this list, as they rarely give trouble unless abused by being fed dirty fuel (internal scoring) or water (hydraulic lock, rust)

Only disturb the injector pump if you have a real reason to do so. Re-timing them correctly is no easy task, and best left to the professional diesel fitter, although the T90 is a lot easier than some. If you really MUST remove the pump, mark the flanges so that you can put it back PRECISELY as it was to within .001mm. Get it wrong and the engine will never run so well.
