My engine pumped a load of oil into the bilge today - It seems to have come from the fitted oil sump pump spout. The handle had pushed itself upto the raised (suction position) Do these lock down in any way or should they stay down by themselves. Tried screwing it down to see if it would lock down but no success. Dont think the neighbours were to impressed when l pumped the bilge on return to the pontoon.
Any idea's gratefully received

Hi,
No they do not lock down, they do not normally pump oil out either. Have you got a lot of back pressure this would cause the problem.
On some engines there is a small tap which is below the pump and can be turned off to prevent this.

Ours did this last year and as access was so difficult I never did manage to see what the problem was. Over a run of say 6 hours it would discharge about a litre into the bilge. When we took the engine out I couldn't see any obvious problem and put it down to the pump connection to the sump as that was a bit slack.

On the new Thornycrofts (Mitsubishi) they have a plug that screws into the end of the pump to prevent leakage.

Re: Vandal

If you pumped oil overboard, I hope your rings are broken and you have run your bearings.
Your engine should be over a contained area in which the oil should collect. Shear laziness not to use absorbant material to collect any oil in your bilge. I hope your Marina refuses to renew your berth.

Re: Vandal

In response to Brian Humber B***OCKS. As a matter of routine l always give the bilge a couple of pumps. It was a surprise to me to see the oil. Thank you for your kind wishes on the prospects for my engine. Of course were not all perfect !

There should be a small stopcock near the inlet to the pump. If not, you could fit one, probably most easily to the outlet pipe - it'll be a standard diameter, possibly the same as Calor pipe: if you don't close it off, it'll tend to syphon when the oil's warm and the boat's heeled. (And to the objectionable, self-righteous g*b****es below, the guy's trying to rectify the thing, thanks for your help, and my advice to you in return is to get a real life and go and pick on Sellafield, Dounreay, the nuclear industry in general, your local (or any) sewerage dept, N Sea oil producers, farmers, and a thousand other REAL polluters. Also, you'd be none the worse of a flick through 'How to win friends and influence people'.)

Re: Vandal

I thought you could'nt have done it on purpose. These things happen and other people should'nt be so quick on the draw.

The tap on the pump on my thornycroft left an annoying drip in the bilge, the tap is hard to see as its under the pump, but a tweek with a pair of mole grips stopped the drip. Its not hard to see that it could syphon the sump oil out if it works loose.(i also but a extra hose on the end of the pump ,witha bung to be sure.As for those expensive things that soak up the drips try disposable nappies(yes i know "land fill"but better that in the river)) but they soak up the oil well , are cheep and wrap up into a neat package.( to be disposed of in the wast oils container,) /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: Vandal

You are a Pratt Sir!!

Not all biges have oil in them, so perhaps you are the one with the problem, apart from your attitude problem that is.

ALSO, ever had to be pumped out when in danger of sinking only to have the strainers of the collection hose blocked by "absorbent" material. Not funny.
