Hi All!

I have recently bought a 1969 Thompson T24, which happens to be my first ever yacht. The main sail is in poor condition and I'd like to replace it but don't know the sail dimensions. Can anyone help?

Cheers,

Andreas

My mate had one of these, they are a brilliant sea boat, and I sailed her is some rough weather. There are a good number on the East Coast and I would have thought that any of the long established sailmakers would have the dimensions on record. Cannot you measure the existing sail?

The T24 is a lovely boat - and very good in rough conditions. A bit heavy by modern standards, but particularly fast to windward in a good bit of wind. She has a very noticeable "groove" when she gets going on a beat and you can clearly feel if you've let her go off the boil. Can have a little lee helm in very light conditions, but I only ever broached once in lively conditions and I was tying my shoelace at the time, so I guess I deserved it!

Keep a close eye on the woodwork, decks and superstructure, she's built in the traditional way of wooden boats and any leaks will lead to later problems. The GRP hull is built like a brick outhouse. Various keels, my favourite is the cast iron with a bulb on the bottom.

There were three or four rig designs, with only minor changes. You'll really have to measure her to find which you've got. You might speak to Seateach in Emmsworth as they have a database of dimensions of all the boats they've worked on. This was where I found there were several rigs. I'll go see if I can find a copy of the dimensions! She should respond well to a new sail.

Thank you all very much for your replies.

Rob, thanks for digging up those details. If you can send me the scanned copies it would be great! I guess I'll have to measure the dimensions. Do you think that I can get a used sail that's approximately similar size to the size I want or should it be spot on?

Once you've found out the rig dimensions for your boat, you should be able to get a reasonable secondhand sail from perhaps a sailmaker or eBay - just keep looking and something will turn up. Go for a slightly smaller sail which won't need any alteration to make it fit.
Try these people:- http://www.exchangesails.co.uk/ or http://www.secondhandsails.co.uk/index.shtml

or google 'secondhand sails'
