Have just bought a genuine antique Indian dug out canoe, so I thought to indulge in a bit of one upmanship.
We will launch directly from the lock gates and straight under the road bridge at Battlesbridge, and carry the rapids down to Hullbridge. At about 11kts over the ground, we should be there just in time to ride the annual Crouch Bore to Burnham, and have entered the Slalom Nationals through the moorings, for which we are highly fancied.
We will carry on into the Roach to enter the Thames Barge tug of war before heading out to round the Whitaker, which we will tie up to for lunch.
I have fashioned a Lateen rig from bamboo and a scrap of sail from the Cutty Sark restoration, so if there is more than F6 on the nose, we will head over to Esbjerg for a decent bacon buttie.
As the tides are against us, we will leave it there for a bit of sightseeing.
Should be OK for gear, as we have Maurice Griffiths' charts from 1959, and a bit of clobber from Blondie Hasler.
We were chatting with Robin KJ in the pub, and he recommended taking only Whisky and Cigars. Top Man.
Dunno what we are going to do on the Sunday yet.
