First sail of the season this AM, probably the latest start in 15 years, came to getting the spinnaker pole down on friends boat, lost my footing fell on my *****e now bloody back is agony, this season has got to get better.

Commiserations. We had a shake-down cruise this morning, which consisted of motoring out and putting the sails up in 15-20kn wind, sailing for 1/4hr and returning to base, proving that everything works and the skipper can still remember how to do it, including a brilliant return to our finger, with wife and skipper fully coordinated, and no one to watch.

We are on our third outing of the year, mainly in F5/7, and a bit of 8. When it's not been too stormy or torrential rain the sailing has generally been very good. Fast. The temperature has been in single figures for most of the period, and fresh snow on the hills is being forecast tonight with another big Atlantic low about to come in. Had a rather swankie meal tonight for Mme S's birthday and we're on a pontoon, but it's back to normal tomorrow. If we can leave here in the teeth of the forecast F8 then we'll avoid the severe gale 9 that due to follow according to the inshore forecast. Otherwise we shall be dropping the pin and sitting it out somewhere.

After a poor 2004 in The West we decided to head south for the Isles of Scilly in 2005. We went around Ireland instead, but the way things are, I am thinking of heading south again next year. So far, this season has that 2004 feel to it.

I've only been sailing 3 years, but each year, everyone says this year is worse than last year (and last year wasn't good)

Do I detect a trend?
I had high hopes for this year, but so far not a lot to shout about. I am boat-less this year, but have a couple of alternative rides.
The weather doesn't look super though.
I had thought of building a Dylanesque punt, but shan't bother in the face of this weather.

I may spend the money on some flashy rear wheels for my other hobby.
