I have for years laid my babies (all resting on trailers) up for winter with nothing more than antifreeze ,oil change and a large tarpauline propped at stem and stern to allow a flow of air ,perfectly OK until I started reading this forum.Now Im paranoid and feel I must have a dehumidifier to keep her dryer than dry. Off I go to Focus,Homebase etc and found one at B& Q as someone suggested at around £70, chickened out at the till and came home!! Looked in the local free admag and have got one for £30 as new, Paranoia satisfied for a while at 40 quid saving!! anybody else influenced as badly as me by reading here?

No I don't lay up for the winter, They best winterization for the engine is keep using it. Some of the winters days boating is brilliant. If its freezing cold frost everywhere clear skies, get the boat out.

Would love to Barry,but nearest water is Avon,speed limit about my tickover,fresh water to freeze my raw water cooled block.Going down to Milford for Xmas but SWMBO not keen on freezing on boat,shed rather walk the dogs on the beach!!

Load of bolocks My boat is 300 miles away but still going down ofer crimbo even if on my own. Just use the bugger and leave the heating on inbetween.

Yep..I'm not winterising this year, intend to use the boat most weeks and have trips planned for both Boxing Day and New Years day. But I have, following all the advice given on here, got both a dehumifier and oil filled radiator in situ, which is keeping the cabins nice and dry. By the way, do you think I need a tube heater in the engine even though I am running the boat at least once a week?

I was brought up as a yoof boating on the lower Thames all through the year, all that was needed was a wee heater on the coldest nights, never had problems.
My boat comes ashore every second year and is 'properly winterised' as no power available. But she stays in this year with a couple of greenhouse heaters set at 'frost' setting and the domestic water drained down ( but I don't think even that is necessary). On those fine winter's days its great to get out.

I know were your coming from. This is the first year I have left a boat on the water over winter, I posted a few questions regarding winter use and became a little confused myself. However I think I am now ok with it.
