Thinking of buying my first yacht - advice please

Would it seem reasonable that buying a 30-35foot yacht in the £20-30 range and keeping it for say 10 years would cost the right side of £4k per year?

Swinging mooring , once a year lift-out and in, depreciation, insurance, repairs, maintenance etc.

Yes, that makes sense, as long as your mooring for the summer is sub £1000 and the same for the winter storage. You would have to be sensible on upgrades to the boat, most of which are avoidable anyway.

This would not include variable costs of using the thing - but we mostly ignore those anyway.

Another thought that as a "first time buyer", it might be better to buy from someone retiring from sailing rather than trading-up. There would hopefully be plenty of extras like dinghy, buoyancy aids/safety gear etc included in the sale rather than taken to another boat.

Don't think there is any particular pattern. You have to look at each individual boat on its merits. Obviously there are merits in buying a boat with a good inventory, but it is the price of getting it in the state you want that is important, not the headline asking price. Sometimes the inventory is a negotiating point.
