Hi all,

We are thinking of selling our house and moving onto a houseboat, we have seen a few we like but I need an idea of hidden costs and on going maintenance costs? I don’t want to make the move and regret it.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi. I think you'll need to specify the desired country/region (presumably work and/or schooling dependent?), as costs/regulations will vary from place to place. Finding a residential mooring will likely be one of your biggest challenges, and maintenance costs will largely depend on the size of boat (and how handy you are!). Unfortunately there's not really enough info in your OP for anyone to provide a useful response.

Welcome Jon,

Yes more info required but a few general points to start the ball rolling:

Boats go down in value, houses (tend to) go up
Do not buy a boat until you have a mooring
Residential moorings are very hard to come by in UK and it's getting harder & more expensive to do it "under the radar"
It's not really a cheap alternative (or take everything you see on Youtube with a large pinch of salt) unless you're privately renting in the SE or something

Most of us on here are sea based not inland waterways based - if you're thinking of inland waterways try canalworld forum...
