Hi currently looking into buying a small cruiser boat/yacht something like
24foot
Diesel engine

Can anyone help on information as for average costs of yearly mooring somewhere near Essex/Kent/East london/Thames
Maintenance costs
Any other yearly fees that need paying as never owned a boat not sure what will be required.
Average costs of a diesel to sail from England to any of these countries France, Spain or Turkey. I understand will vary from boat to boat as differences in fuel efficiency.

Any help will be grateful, Thank you.

Lots of variables but around 8k would probably account for everything.
But then again BOATs (bring out another thousand) can and will surprise you especially when nothing goes wrong.
Enjoy what will be a fantastic purchase.

A crossing to France is possible after gaining suitable experience but Spain or further would involve road transport .
What sort of boat do you have in mid - can you give an example?

Nick Burham did a video last year outlining some of the costs involved in owning a boat (y)

1k to 10k depending upon the boat and where moored. You need to give more details as to the type of boat and mooring you are after to get a more accurate figure and then possibly double it depending on your 'diy' skills.
Boats do take maintenance regardless of what the adverts suggest.

Has anyone actually take a 25ft sports cruiser from the UK to spain under its own power ? I suspect not .
Via the french rivers /canals maybe? But its hardly a day trip. Over a couple of years perhaps.

So a boat like that you would transport there and leave it moored abroad to use it? Can't they sail on the sea? I think I take for granted everytime I've been was on a cruise ship so slightly different in size but thought would be the same principle to sail through just a bit more of a rough ride lol

That boat claims to be "certified" for carrying eight passengers to sea. In a 24ft mobo, that needs a bit of investigation before you flash the cash.
Fair from buying anything at the moment just looking for information on what the boats running costs would be and type of destinations a small boat like that could reach

Hi there. Welcome along.

Not sure you've really understood what is involved here, UK to Turkey in a 24' boat....? Maybe this is a windup. It's at least 3000 miles by sea assuming a direct Biscay crossing which is impossible in that boat. No sane person would consider this in a 24' motor boat. Coastal hopping is doable, say 4000 miles. Allowing for 150 miles / day that's 27 days running, fuel, marina fees, running hours, maintenance costs. Plus all costs associated with waiting out weather.

As for costs.
  • Mooring, depends a lot on what you want and where you are, but between 1k and 5k / year
  • Maintenance and engine servicing, could be £500-1000 / year
  • Insurance, maybe 3-500
  • Fuel. Diesel easily available, the boat will use less of it than a petrol equivalent, and it's cheaper than petrol. Depends on two things - how many miles / hours you do; and how fast you go . That Crownline will burn about 40 litres/hour at 25 kts or 1.6 litres/mile. Your Turkey trip will use about 6500 litres, call it 12k euros each way. And you'll need to refuel 30+ times.
  • Marina visitor fees. About £20-25 / night
  • Budget for broken things, as long as your piece of string
  • Annual Lift, scrub, and antifoul, DIY is cheap but hard work. Pay someone, £500+

Thanks for the reply I think we can both agree to scrap the turkey idea lol so where do most people who own a boat sail just to parts of the UK and France? I was thinking only doing an abroad trip once a year then other times sail more UK territory. But say spain nearest part to England would that be possible plus the fuel costs involved in that?

Welcome....

We bought our first boat three years ago after a lot of research. The best advice we got was 'look at as many boats as you can - even boats you don't think you want.'

If you're new to boating the worse thing you can do is buy a boat just because you like the way it looks and you think it'll be fun. A boat is, above all else, a tool to do a job - and like all tools it'll be great (hopefully) at doing that job, but useless at others.

I'd suggest it is better to decide how you want to use a boat and how often, then look at all sorts of boats and then look to buy one that (a) you like and (b) does the job. I'm not sure too that there are many 24ft motor cruisers that are getting you to Turkey in great comfort.....

Listen to the 'boat buyers secret weapon' podcast. It's American, so a lot of it is about pontoons and other boats of no interest to you, but the guy really knows his stuff and has a lot of good ideas to put first time boat buyers in the right frame of mind to choose the right boat for them.

Enjoy looking at lots of boats in various marinas, and I hope to see you on the Thames one day!

Dear NTNL
I've read your replies but comparing to a cruise ship does worry me. Sorry.
Have you sailed (with sails) or had any experience on a motorboat?
If not then I'd suggest you do a level 2 powerboat course. 2 days around 350£. Will give u great insight to what a 20-25 foot boat (often done on a rib mind) will do and the limitations and safety issues.
Crossing the channel even to France will then have some perspective for you.

As per other post, then look at loads of boats for what might suit u.

Don't let comments put u off, its a big learning curve.

Just to clarify, you mention 'yacht' in your OP and 'sailing' since. Are you considering both sailing and motor boats, or just motor? The answers to your questions will vary quite considerably for a yacht or a mobo.
