Hi everyone,

Seriously thinking about upgrading to a bigger boat, just wondering what would be the biggest size a man car run single handed.... 60ft sounds reasonable?

There is no limit. There is adequate technology to aid you to do all the mooring manoeuvring by remote control. Rope size may be the limiting factor if completely alone, but with enough marina help a very big yacht can be tied up alone. There is no limit to the size you can look after and maintain, within reason, it’s just a function of time to have to invest and standards you wish to achieve.

Totally agreed,
What i mean is from tge practical point of view is it possible to be alone in one of the close by islands to stay over night in a 60ft boat.

I believe that some states required a certain number of crews on board for a certain size of boats. I guess i have to consult the coast guard regarding this point.

I think the official crewing requirements only apply once you get over 24m.

A large boat can be operated single handed in good weather when everything works perfectly and there is some one to assist you berth at the other end is a doddle.

But and its a big but, when things do not go to plan, skipper needs the loo on passage in poor weather, there is a an engine problem or bilge alarm or skipper falls down flybridge steps etc, or think worse stern seal leak, fire, serious health problem or injury or you need to attend another boat in distress. That is when another person is essential.
