Hi I'm thinking about buying a 1950s Purbrook Heron - does anybody have any advice/comments/tips or tell me what I should be watching out for please. Much appreciated

Very nice boats. Probably the nicest of the "pocket cruisers" of that era.

I've known two people who own/ owned one and they speak very highly of them.

No special peculiarities that I know of - good orthodox construction from good materials.

Very dependable seaworthy boats designed by Hugh Rossiter at the Purbrook yard, now Rossiter Yachts on the Avon at Christchurch. Attractive norwegian canoe stern with a reliable, simple centre-plate gives a draft of 3 feet up, 5'4'' down. One bilge keel example built I believe. Rugged bermudian rig with running backstays, although only ever really needed in more demanding conditions. I owned one for almost ten years, delightful!! Not a racer but sails well in both light and strong winds. I always felt safe in her, only replaced by another Rossiter boat in wood the 27' Pintail. So you can see I,m quite biased! Centre plate pin has a life of roughly ten years, but is easily replaced. Knowledge of keel bolt history would be wise. Frame ribs behind the bunk stringers should be checked as too, the tight turn of the bilge in the canoe stern area, again not too tragic if one or two found. I think most examples had Stuart engines but Albin, Bukh were also fitted, single cylinder Yanmar often found to be the re- engine choice. I wish you good luck in your search for a Heron, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Interesting the first one is called "Teekay", the same as the previous poster. Your boat some time ago Teekay? The second one really does look good though.

Proper buttaful in 'er? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Ah well, maybe one day, well maybe not, I think I would like summat a bit older, sort of grab a granny boat hunting? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, the very same. When I had her she was painted in Sharkskin Grey, sounds awful but she did look the part then. There is a picture of her on the Rossiter Yacht web-site advertising a different boat for sale, sorry but I have'nt sussed how to post pictures or links yet! I hadn't realised Teekay was up for sale, brings back a whole host of memories!! I suppose that's what it's all about!!

Well I would question that - but then I would /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif . They are very pretty yachts, and interestingly Roach's name was changed to Heron by the previous owner - coincidence or aspirations of grandeur?

Oh yes, definately aspirations of grandeur!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Aint you finished it yet??!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
