Met the owner of a 1912 sailing ship (85 foot on deck), anchored in Margarita. Fantastic atmospere sitting on deck with rum punch - you can walk round on the caprail - BUT:
- Pumps out 1500 gallons worth of leaks every day (about seven tons)
- Cockroaches the size of mice (he reckons the result of three circumnavigations and multi-species interbreeding).
Other minor impracticalities include half-ton anchor (try hoisting that when the windlass jammed) and a week's work to take down the mainmast (necessary for hauling out as no hoist can take him masts up).
Fifty grand just to make her watertight...

Never mind, the Vikings used to consider there longships to be seaworthy if they only needed two men to bail contuously/ continusely/ continously....
