things to do in a boatyard for week

Whether you do it by train/bike or by bike if you get up to Stirling, I can thoroughly recommend the new Bannockburn Visitor Centre. Went there a couple of weks ago and it was well worth it. Free if you are a national Trust or NT Scotland member.

Also take in Stirling Castle, especially the newly renovated Royal Apartments.

Find some wood, sand it then give it a really nice 6 coats of a decent varnish. Every time you look at it you will remember doing the work with care and patience. If you have no wood, make somthing first. Or do something on a friends boat, by agreement of course.

Do a load of those irritating small jobs that you've been putting off for ages.

Such good advice. Even when I know I can't sail the boat (in winter or because the tide is out, or if it's blowing hard) I often go to the club with great enthusiasm for some task or idea, completion of which would (I tell myself) seriously improve my sailing...

...and while I'm keenly analysing that prospect, I easily overlook half a dozen quite serious matters which are crying out for attention, but whose completion won't make the boat any better than she ought to have been to start with. Far less interesting, but invariably much more important.

Was it the feminist movement which coined the phrase "5hit-work", meaning arduous or tedious tasks which only get noticed when they haven't been done properly?

One thing for sure, good sailing weather is a rotten time to remember that one may be held ashore by such jobs having been put off.

well I was wrong about the weather or maybe I'm just an optimist who hopes it will turn out better than it does.

Edinburgh has so much you wont find it hard to pass the time

Go and climb Arthurs seat where you get the best views of Edinburgh looking over Holyrood park

Also go up Carlton Hill where you also get stunning views of princess street etc.

Both free and you have a bike

Edinburgh Zoo will cost you but its very good. There is a cycle path on an old railway line that takes you most of the way there. Sustrans have cycle maps of Edinburgh

http://www.sustrans.org.uk/ncn/map?...&zoom=7&route-type=all-routes&region=Scotland

You can cycle the coastal route up to Cramond along the coastal path

The botanical gardens is near you in Inverleith park and free

Just go and cycle some of the streets in the older areas (new town, old town, etc.) and you will turn up a few gems especially with you abilities with a camera

The Starbank Inn just along from you towards Newhaven does a nice pint if you're getting cabin fever

Try to get to the Maritime Museum at Trinity House - you could walk it from where you are. You had to phone a number to make a booking to get in last time I went - b'internet research will find it. It's small yet perfectly formed.....
