On our way from the East Coast to the south and west we sail overnight to get the hard bit out out of the way. In the space of two nights we encountered these sights, both of which caused some confusion until they got close enough for the actual hull outline to resolve. Both were yachts and both were under way.

I think the right hand one may have been a LED "green" light looking white, or else an ordinary incandescent lamp where the green lens had fallen out. As far as I know I have normal color vision.

It can be very confusing seeing a yacht sailing with both tricolour and navigation lights on. When under power have nav , steaming, overtaking lights but not the tricolour as well. And when sailing use the tricolour and nothing else. When motor sailing just use the "under power" lights.

It is our responsibility to display the right lights. We might encourage others in to dangerous decisions if our lights are incorrectly displayed.

But please correct me if I have got it wrong

not sure what you mean by overtaking lights ...

but I agree - you see it all the time in the solent - ppl coming in lit up like a christmas tree ... totally crap! Cowes fireworks is probably the best - so many with nav lights on whilst at anchor ....

I found the starboard lens on my Aqasignal nav light had bleached out quite a lot after just a few years (in sunny climes) and had to replace it. The port was fine. May be what happened here with the "two whites".

The other one is a bit odd as you appear to be looking at the starboard bow, or else from well astern, in neither of which situation should you see any reds, but as has been said it is probably someone running both masthead and deckhead lights - a common practice I fear.

No, my drawing was wrong! Now correct

Yacht came in here last week with mast-head tri-colour above white steaming light- nearly asked him if he had any fish for sale.

[/ QUOTE ] We get those 'fishing yachts' here too. They never ever have any decent fish.
