1. Marlow charging £10 a night to moor up from £6 last year.

2. People who throw large plastic sheets and other rubbish into the river that foul my prop and cost me to resolve.

3. Boaters who won't move up at lock waiting areas or stop in the middle of the lock instead of moving up as far as possible.

4. Fishermen who insist on hiding behind bushes, casting well out into the river and hurling obscenities at you when you catch their lines (which could b*gg*r my cutlass bearing and cost me).

5. Bankside moorings where we have to pay but where they do no dredging or maintenance - especially Marlow, Henley and Wallingford but also both EA and National Trust at Runnymede - they can hardly expect to make money from me if I can't get alongside).

6. Trip boats that exceed the speed limit with apparent impunity and create objectionable wash - particularly at Hampton Court (had instance this year where cleats ripped out of decks and other minor damage which costs me).

7. Other boaters that exceed the speed limit and create objectionable wash when there's no Inspector around to catch 'em. Especially those that ignore screams from bankside to 'slow down' (they make people think all mobos are prats).

8. Generators being run ad nauseum..come on guys, learn about battery capacities and efficient electrics).

9. Rowers that think they own the river and everyone else should put up with them as they are (probably a lost cause but I live in perpetual hope).

10.Boaters who moor with at least ten feet spare at either/both ends and won't shift up even when asked nicely.

11. Narrow boats who moor end to end at busy locations when they could easily raft up to each other (yes I could raft up to a narrowboat, but have you ever tried getting across to the bank from a cruiser via a NB?) At least the EA are now publicly encouraging rafting which is a step forward.

12. Small boat hirers who behave stupidly to the risk of themselves and others.

13. Bray and Boveney Locks which are far too small resulting in long queues at busy periods. Come on EA...do something about this one and you really will get Thames boaters on your side.

14. People who telephone Byron to tell him I've left my Red Ensign up overnight.

15. Anyone using the river I enjoy that exhibits arrogance, intolerance or rudeness to river users.

BOUQUETS TO:
1.The Environment Agency for major improvements to lock areas during the last year or so.

2.Ditto the EA for extending times for publicly available electrics at locks to 10pm during summer months.

3.Hampton Court Palace for replacing mooring rings and providing rubbish bins (sorry guys, nice try but the bins are few and far too small).

4.Henley town council for listening to the gripes at increasing mooring charge to £10 and reducing them back to £8 this year (are you listening, Marlow???).

5.All the lock keepers for being a fine collection of Mr. Nice Guy's and doing a difficult job with more than a reasonable amount of kindnness and consideration even when most normal people would blow a gasket.

6. All the friendly and considerate boaters that contribute to our enjoyment of the river - and that includes Forbsie, SeasprayIII, Apollo, Dogsbody, Byron, and others too numerous to mention including thousands of gongoozlers watching at locks to keep me on my boathandling toes!

Personally I would have gone further on the Rowing, and the Sardine Cans (sorry NarrowBoaters) front but thats another story.

You also missed the lack of dredging last twenty years resulting in distinct lack of river to actually float in.

We are now seriously looking for another boat so hopefully catch up with you soon.

me thinks you have got a bit of river rage, we stopped at the complete angler restaurant, thought oh thats nice they have put large bollards outside to tie up to.
A flunkey came out & started messing with a gate, oh thats nice too, help to moor up. He looked us up and down, and we said "we would like some lunch and we will be changing".

A signal from his master & flunkey undid the gate he was actually locking and let us in, £60 for a lunch of a one course snack & two bottles of beer, but then we did have a fantastic view of the Thames, ah em just like we had from the boat. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The Compleat Angler.....

.......you should have known it would be expensive by the way they spell "Compleat" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Actually, I thought their main course prices around £15 not that much more expensive than many restaurants. Moor there overnight and save the tenner it will cost you on the town side and its actually quite cheap !

Anyways, what boat and when were you there then?

This one is a real pain. Ran aground last year 3 times whilst directly approaching and less than 3 metres from a mooring £X.000 sign. Inexcusable. And no I don't have a greater than average draught. (1.2 m) Henley , Windsor and Marlow, not to mention half a dozen other narrow escapes. Maybe I should have sent them the prop repair bill! This is one of the reasons I have now debunked for the south coast.

Its not just the Thames

My old cruising ground was the River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire.
The situation there can only get worse as they open up the Bedford link allowing more NB's to come in from the Grand Union.
I quote from a letter from GOBA which accomapnied the Summer Edition News:
"Please remember our mooring code: start at the very end of the mooring, reduce gaps if needed, raft up if possible, be considerate."
you will always see motor boats rafted....narrow boats...only when they really have to.

And as for the liveaboards who permanently occupy the 48 hour moorings in Ely....well i despair....when they are told to move they go for a week or two then reappear!
Like many others....new cruising grounds, which do better suit the boat, and access to the big blue stuff is easier then Denver to Kings Lynn

Re: The Compleat Angler.....

well it was £60+ as I can still remember it 3 years later, it was not in the restaurant (maybe its cheaper in there) but the room overlooking the river. Passed another very posh riverside restaurant, loads of people eating at 3pm, read afterwards its got a 2 year waiting list for a meal, thank god we didn't try to stop there.

was on this boat.... which I still have, tho I think I might have sold it now. Have to confess I have had narrow boats /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

"Does Boveney Lock still have that "interesting" lock keeper ? "

Try as I might, I can't think of anything about the Boveney lock-keeper that might be "interesting" enough to elicit your question.......so the answer is probably 'no'./forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: The Compleat Angler.....

Got a buyer for Delft at last? That must be a relief.
The other restaurant was probably the Waterside Inn at Bray...Michel Roux's place. Now that really is pricey.
Perhaps once youve sold Delft you could treat HLB to a mid week B&B there?
Romantic Indulgence but it might be best if you left the hat at home /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Agree with all your first message having just returned from 2 weeks up the river.
Add to generators - narrow boat and hirer boat main engines running either for power or hot water in the mornings for hours on end.
Top marks to Pangbourne for free moorings and a couple of good pubs.
Had one wet week and one not so bad. Holland again next year.

Yes he is still there. Thankfully a lot of them are getting on a bit and retiring (the ex-one from Penton Hook springs to mind there)

What about the fallen trees on Monkey Island Hotel land just down from Bray ?

If Oakley Court can keep their banks in excellent condition why not Monkey Island Hotel ?

I asked the EA why the river has lost about 200ft of navigation and the said that the Hotel in question was owned by foreign interests and they are having trouble getting a response ! Come on EA clear the river and invoice the hotel owner, then if necessary sue for the fees !!!

I'd add:

paying for mooring to The Brocas when all you get is the right to bang in your own mooring stakes while bumping on the putty. The other side at least gives you money off at the swimming pool

having to pay to licence a tender which spends most of its time dangling on the davits.

Definately agree re Bray and Boveney locks, making them larger would be a good use of the licence money. Mind you, I'd also like Desborough Cut closed to any non powered craft, gets tight in there with three scullers coming down.
