I've just got my boat out of the water (berthed at Southampton) to find up to 1 1/2 inches thickness of calciferous tube worms growing on my hull even though it was antifouled in June. Anyone else seen these?

Blame Water Ballast on Ships

There is increasing pressure on the shipping industry to deploy proper filtering systems on ship's water ballast .

Unfiltered water and weaker antifoul makeup means that the future will only get worse.

Lets hope that sense prevails and responsible ports ban ships that don't comply.

Yup. It seems dependent upon which marina you are in, and even which part of a marina. We can breed a light covering of them in under a month in southern france,

The one thing these critters don't like is copper. So antifoul with high copper content will be better. I am planning to try a stick-on copper foil antifoul for next year perhaps.
